£68.20Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion. Fallen Souls was the winner of Grimethorpe Colliery Band's 1st Annual Composition Competition in 2023. This depictive and impactful work explores the theme of human fallibility. The piece begins with a slow, yearnful introduction that depicts a fall from grace, represented by a horn solo that reflects the innate goodness of humanity. However, the music soon becomes more agitated and dissonant as it represents the temptations that can lead us astray. The opening reaches a climax of chaos and despair, as we are shown the devastating consequences of our choices. The following section depicts the temptations of humanity. The music is chaotic and seductive in this section, with regular time changes and rhythmic instability, representing the many temptations that surround us. The section ends with a sense of uncertainty, as we are left wondering whether we will succumb to these temptations. There is a reprise of the opening horn solo, and a return to the notion of human fallibility, but this time in extended form. Again there is a build toward chaos, and the music becomes more complex and textured, reflecting the complexity of the human journey. The work ends somewhat abruptly with a blaze, leaving the listener with a sense of both hope and uncertainty. This music was inspired by stories of those working in the dark and dangerous conditions of the coal mines, and particularly those hewers right at the coal face. Based around an original theme, the music captures a hymn-like setting of a miner's prayer for safety. Depictions of industry and difficult times follow, but resolve into a triumphant conclusion where dark imagery give way to light. The music is the composer's proud tribute to the industrial heritage of his forebears. £34.95Fire & the Phoenix, The - Christopher Bond
The Fire & the Phoenix (2015) was commissioned by Brett Baker in early 2015 as the opening track to his solo CD 'Myths & Legends'. Whilst structurally a single-movement work, it is presented so that it can link directly into the next work on the CD, adding to a continuous theme comprising a number of pieces from a number of composers. Opening with huge strident chords in the full band, the representation of the phoenix is instantly reflected; bold, powerful and a bird of great intensity. This makes way for a more mystical section marked 'distant' which reflect the beauty of the Phoenix and it's mythical nature where the trombone soars up into its higher register with a sweeping melody. Soon after, the music takes a sharp turn, becoming dramatic and instantly moving away from the mystical mood created previously. Here, we imagine the Phoenix catching fire, burning intensely with huge flames as it gradually turns into ash. We reach a tonic pedal point in the music, over which chord progressions subtly weave in and out of the texture. Here, we imagine the Phoenix rising from the ashes, with the dynamics gradually increasing to reflect this, slowly taking shape as it is born again. A return to earlier material follows, this time manipulated to reflect the Phoenix in its new form - the same bird; the same animal; but at the same time different. A beautiful chorale-like passage is heard before the music transports us back into a magical land, where delicate rhythmic ideas are juxtaposed against bolder lower chords; both ideas together transporting the listener forward into the next piece.

According to Buble, the single and its official music video are "about everyone's dream of finding a relationship and love." Buble co-wrote "Haven't Met You Yet" with Alan Chang and Amy Foster-Gillies and dedicated it to his then fiancee and now wife, Luisana Lopilato (who appears as his love interest in the music video).2012, Nick Jonas covered the song in the TV series Smash, so this music can also be used in a TV/Movie theme concert.Soloist options:Attached is a vocal lead that can be used with the arrangement. All proceeds from "The M-lisada March" are donated to Brass for Africa, a charity making a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in Africa through brass music and brass music education. The composer, Jim Trott, is the founder of a charity called Brass for Africa and one of the organizations the charity supports and works with is the MLISADA organization located in the slums of Kampala, Uganda. MLISADA is a home for ex-street kids, orphans and vulnerable children and at the heart of the home is music and dance. MLISADA have a junior and senior brass band and the bands earn income to feed the home by playing at functions and marches. Jim has often been with the band as they work up anthems and themes for their various engagements and he thought it would be great for MLISADA to have their own theme. So, he has written this short March for these inspiring young people and is delighted that they love to play it whenever they can.

Spirit divine, come as of old. So begins the song by Brindley Boon, and that phrase becomes the message of this piece, and an important motif in the music. It appears at the very beginning of the work and recurs at important points during the piece. The theme of the need for spiritual power is further underlined by the use of the hymns Show your power, Wonder-working power and the very old chorus Send a new touch of power on my soul, Lord.The composer first heard Boon's song Spirit Divine when it was sung by Parkhead Songsters in the Sunday morning meeting at his home Corps of Greenock Citadel. They were visiting for the weekend from Glasgow, and were conducted by Songster Leader Walter Chalmers, himself a beautiful lyric tenor soloist. They sang it in a moving fashion, unaccompanied, and such was the impact that, at the conclusion, many people went to the mercy seat. It made a huge impression on the young composer. It was the first time that Downie discovered the enormous power of music in worship. It also serves as a reminder to us all that young people of a tender age are very capable of grasping deeply significant events happening around them. This music was written for the 2020 UK Territorial Youth Band course.

This bright and attractive concert overture was written while the comp0ser was living in Spain and enjoying life in the sun - a rare experience for an Englishman! It is intended to be an effervescent and cheerful piece, enjoyable both to play and to listen to. There are no great technical challenges in the music but it is essential that the performers play with a firm grasp of the rhythmic nature of the piece.It opens with a bold fanfare, giving the first statement of a theme that is to be used throughout. Once the broad opening is over the music has a feeling of energy and joy that drives all the way through the piece. The style is light and jazz-inflected and owes much to the compositional idiom of Goff Richards, the guru of entertaining band music.Duration: 5.00
