£22.42The Eagle (Cornet Solo with Piano) Liz Lane
The Eagle was commissioned and premiered by Luke Pallister, accompanied by Ruth Webb, at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, on 21 May 2019. The work was funded by personal scholarship time awarded by the University of the West of England. The Eagle is inspired by the Indian tawny eagle synonymous with the world renowned International Centre for Birds of Prey, Newent, and in the 50th anniversary year of landing on the moon, the name of the lunar module, 'eagle'. The music broadly depicts an eagle's soaring take-off, flight and landing. Towards the end it pays homage to the iconic space event, with a cornet melody which sets the words of a sign left on the moon by the astronauts: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind". Musically, The Eagle emulates aspects of the repeated patterns from Widor's Toccata ('Symphony for Organ No. 5'), conveying a sense of travel through the continuously evolving harmonic progressions. Widor wrote the Toccata for a new type of organ with a vast range of timbres and range of orchestral voicing - hence the 'symphony' title - and a range of often integrated cornet and piano timbres are explored. The music is also influenced by an online recording of Widor himself at the age of 88 performing the Toccata at a much slower speed than has become more widely known, demonstrating grandeur, majesty and power - and perhaps in itself emulating a concept of space and flight. £64.95Platform to the Heavens
The piece takes its inspiration from the mountain ranges from one of my favourite countries, Switzerland.I have visited the Swiss Alps on many occasions and I am still taken back by its sheer awesome beauty with every visit. This commission gave me the opportunity to pay homage to this wonderful landscape and paint my own musical picture of it.The piece opens with what I imagine daybreak would be like at one of its many peaks. With the sun growing behind the mountain range, the piece builds from a single note to a huge climatic chord revealing Mother Nature's creation. Then at rehearsal figure 'C' the tempo changes dramatically as we fly through the many slopes of the mountains as if on a manic skiing expedition, revealing the many dangers within the Swiss Alps. The twists, turns and climaxes begin to die away as we enter rehearsal figure 'M' - nightfall over the mountains. As the sun disappears, the sky darkens to reveal the beautiful starlit sky above the mountain range. This middle section starts with the various cadenzas that serve as echoes around the Alps. It then leads to a lyrical solo at rehearsal figure 'O' as the moonlight illuminates the icy mountain peaks. A final cadenza to conclude this section highlights the end of nightfall as the sun starts to rise again. This recapitulation from the opening, signals a new dawn as the sun rises above the snowy peaks once again. The music at this point in its slightly altered state highlights the dawn of a new day in the Alps. The fast manic ski ride follows which takes the piece to its grand finale conclusion. The idea behind the title of this piece is that the Swiss Alps are so beautiful and vast; I can only imagine that they could be a platform connecting the earth to the heavens above.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

£14.94Down by the Riverside (Trombone Solo with Piano) arr. Thomas Hulten
This arrangement by Thomas Hulten of the beloved spiritual Down by the Riverside was born out of a special request from a Danish friend of the arranger - a bass trombonist - who wanted a solo piece to perform alongside his pianist wife at their local Salvation Army corps. Long familiar to traditional jazz players, the tune is often passed around informally, shaped by the spirit of the moment. But here, at last, it has found its way onto the page. Set in a relaxed swing style, this version invites performers to settle into a steady, unhurried groove. While arranged for both tenor and bass trombone, the piece is flexible enough to be played on a wide range of low brass and wind instruments - baritone, euphonium, tuba, sousaphone, serpent, ophicleide, bass sackbut, contrabassoon - whatever is at hand. Whether you're playing in a recital hall or a Sunday service, Down by the Riverside brings warmth, charm, and a touch of New Orleans tradition to any setting. To view a video of Thomas Hulten performing the solo please visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=frmdvfOFkyI Duration: approx. 3.00 minutes PDF download includes solo parts for trombone in bass clef and Bb treble clef, and piano accompaniment.
