Song of Hope - Peter Meechan
Song of Hope is dedicated to my good friend Ryan Anthony (principal trumpet with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra) and his charity, Cancer Blows - a foundation set up to raise awareness and money to further the research that has helped give their family a hope for a future following Ryanas diagnosis of Multiple MyelomaUpon hearing the middle movement (simply titled aSonga) of my cornet concerto, Milestone, Ryan asked me if I could change the end from its current reflective ending to something more uplifting, and to title it Song of Hope, giving it much more meaning than I could have ever imagined.As well as a wind band scoring without soloist, Song of Hope exists with 1, 2 or 3 soloists, accompanied by either wind band, brass band, brass ensemble or symphony orchestra.For my friend Ryan.Each set comes with the soloist part for 1 soloist. Daniel Schutte's well-known hymn, 'I, the Lord of sea and sky', provides the basis for this major four movement work by Martin Cordner. The use of a four-note motif emphasising the first line of the chorus, 'Here I am, Lord' is evident throughout the work.

I came to know of this piece when hearing famous Norwegian ragtime pianist Morten Gunnar Larsen playing it at a concert with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen. I was struck by its melancholic beauty and wanted to arrange it for band.Ragtimes are rarely in a minor key (which this one is) and when you first hear it, you might think it was written around the time when Scott Joplin was the main ragtime composer. But, if you listen more carefully, you notice that some of theharmonies are more advanced than one might expect in traditional ragtime, giving the piece a slightly more contemporary feel. The composer William Bolcom wrote Graceful Ghost in 1970 to honour the memory of his father and it is one of hismost popular pieces.

Festive Fireworks is written in three movements: I. Festivitas, II. Fantasia & III. Fireworks. The piece is based on two different tunes, both presented in the first movement, "Festivitas". II. Fantasia is written as a calm fantasy on the two themes. It includes melodic lines, percussion effects and finish off with cadenza's for Solo Cornet, Solo Horn, Euphonium and Eb Bass. III. Fireworks is a quick movement with lots of energy combined with technique and melodic lines. Elements of the first and second movement is presented and mixed together for a great finale. To the conductor: "I. Festivitas" can also be used as a concert opener or finale and has two differentendings for concert use or contests (by using all the three movements).

No Man's Land was commissioned by the Noordlimburgse Brass Band. Thierry Deleruyelle has written this work in 2018, 100 years after the end of World War I. This work is related to his first work written for brass band, Fraternity, which tells the story about the mining accident in Courieres, France. Eight years later, World War I broke out. I seem to have taught a number of students in recent years who have either embarked on medical careers or are studying to do so. Whether it be our beleaguered NHS in general or the working conditions of Junior Doctors in particular, sentiments naturally run high. I was asked & inspired to write a piece for some of these 'medical musicians' to perform in situations of protest or industrial action; situations in which they felt there was "No OtherOption" than to make their feelings known through their chosen path of protest. There is a deliberate irony in the fact that this piece is written in the style of an upbeat and good-humoured folk reel.
