The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. The tune has since been the inspiration for at least four different Christmas carols, of which Carol of the Bells is the most famous. Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.Duration: 3:00

In Europe, too, people have become acquainted with the legal wing of navy officers and the intrigues surrounding Commander Harmon "Harm" Rabb (David James Elliott) and his partner Lieutenant Colonel Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell). Both inside and outside the courtroom they fight with one major aim: winning! In their personal relationships, there's a good deal of tension too. "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project, he made the suggestion that a Tango, althoughmore Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composerAstor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himselfperforming (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Roger and I both thought it would be a good idea to let some of themusicians in the ensemble take improvised solos. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango."

Le Canal En Octobre - Frederic Paris - Len Jenkins
The tune that forms the basis of this arrangement for brass band was recommended to us by a good friend who plays concertina and melodeon in the traditional English Folk genre. Its delightfully simple melody is based on a French Schottische composed by Frederic Paris and is frequently played at folk music sessions where it is instantly recognised and internationally known. As a folk tune used for dancing, the piece would consist of Tune A and Tune B which would each be repeated several times in succession. In this arrangement for brass, that basic order of the melodies has been varied, and includes a brief foray into a minor key to maintain audience interest. It is not a difficult piece and should be within the capabilities of a fourth section band. However, it is recognised that not every brass band possesses a Marimba, and that part can be played on a Glockenspiel, with appropriate adjustment to fit the available range of the instrument.

The arranger has described Coming Home! as music of reconciliation. In a world of conflict, at both national and personal level, it would be good to think that this music could bring a message of hope and resolution of problems for people who are hurting. It is a setting of Will Lamartine Thompson's melody to his own words beginning 'Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling'. The chorus starts 'Come home, come home! Ye who are weary,come home!'. The rising interval of a fifth is always associated with the words 'Come home'. It is the arrangers hope that the gentle and moving nature of this music will create for all listeners, whether or not they possess religious faith, a spirit of harmony and reconciliation.
