Worlds Apart (Cornet Solo) - Andrew Stevenson

Worlds Apart is a lyrical solo for cornet and piano. The basis of the piece is the use of two contrasting themes, in the form of melodies. These themes symbolise longing and hope. The opening melody is longing and the next melody at letter B is one of hope. The idea behind the piece is that the two themes show the connection of longing or loneliness and hope when faced with being apart from something/someone special. The emotional build-up of the piece should enable performers to bring this idea to life, with extra thought taken on expression and phrasing to show the contrasts.

LIFE ABUNDANT (Cornet Solo with Brass Band Set) - Robert Redhead

Life Abundant is a cornet solo written as a musical biography of the search of soul to find the meaning of life. The music begins with the dawning of life, then the abundant joy of childhood ('My cup is full and running over'), followed by the uncertainty of the youth who longs to say 'I want to live right' but doesn't know how. The answer comes in a meditative setting of the composer's own song 'One life to live, O may I live for Thee', after which the music confidently builds to a climax which expresses the joy of abundant life found in Jesus".

Flying the Breeze - Philip Sparke

Flying the Breeze opens with three repeated B's (representing the initials of the Breeze Brass Band from Japan who commissioned this work). A short introduction leads to a robust theme from the baritones and euphoniums which is taken up by cornets and trombones. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the solo cornet and then to a third theme from a solo trombone. A graceful second subject leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running cornet passage, which leads to a short coda.

MANCHESTER CONCERTINO (Cornet Solo with Brass Band) - Meechan, Peter

Manchester Concertino is a concertino in three movements for cornet and brass band. It was written in late summer/early autumn in, as the title suggests, Manchester, UK. The first movement, Fanfare, was written for Belgian cornetist Harmen Vanhoorne, and explores the main musical idea behind the piece, a minor third. The loud fanfare gives way to a cadenza over a timpani roll, before a reprise of the opening fanfare. The second movement, Dream, was commissioned by Keith Johnson and is dedicated to Jess Tredrea. It is a slow, lilting, movement - almost as if the listener was hearing the piece through a summer haze. The final movement is simply titled Finale and is dedicated to Roger Webster. New material is fused with the fanfare from the opening movement leading to a climatic finish to the work. Duration: 10:30. Recorded on Polyphonic Brass Band CD QPRL236D My Heroes.

Shackleton's Cross (Cornet Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Goodall, Howard - Hall, Daniel

Shackleton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910 1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement for trumpet or cornet and brass band follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). The Moody Mallard - Dan Price

Solo Series - Grade 5 (Soloist 6) A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price. The Moody Mallard is an up-beat solo for cornet and brass band or piano in a Latin-American style. The work is percussive throughout and the opening theme takes inspiration from the mambo whilst the second introduces the stylistic elements that we associate with the tango. There is a haughtiness present in most Latin music which is reminiscent to the persona of many birds but most noticeable in the duck known as the Mallard. To most people, the male or drake is the most recognisable of common ducks with his squat, inverted neck, white collar and glossy green head. Duration: 00:03:45

The Sultry Swan - Dan Price

Solo Series - Grade 4 (Soloist 5) A virtuosic cornet solo by Dan Price The Sultry Swan is a slow melody for cornet or trumpet and has two clearly defined musical ideas in its construction. The introduction and first theme are lyrical in texture and evoke images of the river bank, the water gently ebbing to and fro whilst the swan glides gracefully across its glassy surface. Although there are no other birds as elegant as the swan in water there are also none as comical out of it, and in contrast to the first theme the second theme reflects the natural 'waddle' of the swan when it is on dry land. A laid back solo for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Featured on Tom Hutchinsons debut CD In Principle Duration: 00:04:50

Over the Horizon - Christopher Bond

Soprano Cornet Solo with Brass BandOver the Horizon (2017), whilst both harmonically and compositionally a simple endeavour, is a spine-tingling beautiful melody for soprano cornet. Based on the painting seen in the sleeve notes of Steve Stewart’s album of the same name, the work takes its inspiration from the open expansiveness of the ocean, glistening in the moonlight as four people sit quietly - two parents, a boy, and a girl. A feeling of heartfelt longing throughout the work which is developed both melodically and texturally by soloist and accompaniment; perhaps reflecting the desire to know indeed what is over the horizon. The longing intensifies with a climatic section of grandeur - a feeling of longing which arguably isn't resolved until that all-important - and high - last note.Over The Horizon was written for and commissioned by Steve Stewart and Cory Band in Spring 2017.
