In Memoriam - Arthur Sullivan - Neville Buxton
Written before teaming up with W.S. Gilbert, the first performance of "In Memoriam" was in 1866 at the Norwich Festival. Just before Sullivan started the composition, his father passed away. Sullivan turned his grief to the completion of this overture. It is also thought that the work was initially inspired by a poem of the same name by the Lord Tennyson Alfred. The overture enjoyed much success during Sullivan's lifetime, although sadly is seldom heard today. This arrangement of the work is the 2013 set test piece for the Butlins Mineworkers Open Brass Band Festival, 2nd section.

Originally commissioned as the set test piece for Section B of the 2007 European Brass Band Championships, The Drop was re-worked and extended as The Drop: Remixed for Leyland Band to perform at the 2008 RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester. Lyonesse was commissioned by the Brass Band Heritage Trust as the test piece for the Finals of the National Youth Brass Band Championships held in Manchester in April 2005. This atmospheric music, ideal as atest piece for First and Second section bands, takes its inspiration from the lost kingdom of Lyonesse, the mythical spur of land linking Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, and its associated legend of Tristan and Isolde. Keystone tells the story of the Odeon of Vriezenveen, a town in the Netherlands. Historically speaking, "odeon" (or "odeum") was the name for ancient Greek and Roman buildings used for activities such as singing, music and poetry. This was the name chosen in 1998 by several members of the 'Vriezenveense Harmonie' for the cultural centre they decided to have built. The piece starts slowly with the bass instruments, then speeds up in a counterpoint passage where the main motif moves from one set of instruments to another. After a slower section, the music speeds up again to reach a majestic chorale symbolising the splendid Odeon. This composition has been orchestrated for brass band to serve as the test piece in the first division of the French National Brass Band Championship of 2023.

Alpina Brass was the test piece for the first division of the Fetes Cantonales on 8 and 9 June 2019 in Naters, Switzerland. It consists of three movements, and features a variety of aspects, as is common for a competitionwork. However, as a whole, it has been written in such a way that it can perfectly serve as a concert work as well. It is a challenging piece for every section and offers colourful and melodic as well as spectacular rhythmicsequences and a most impressive ending!
