"Alienus" - a word that means more than just extraterrestrial. It speaks of the foreign, the unfamiliar, the strange. Of that which comes from beyond - and yet stirs questions deep within us.In this work, it may represent many things: an alien, an unknown being, a stranger - or a human soul we cannot understand. My fantasy for brass band, tells the story of an encounter: humans come upon a sleeping, enigmatic creature. They gaze upon it in wonder - and in fear. Hesitantly, they draw near, driven by curiosity. Their inquisitive nature drives them to explore it, gradually crossing the invisible boundaries of reverence and humility - until the creature awakens. What follows remains untold. Each listener is invited to imagine their own story - or simply to be carried away by the music. The sound world of the piece draws from ancient roots: the hymn Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme ("Sleepers Wake, a Voice is Calling"), written in 1599 by Philipp Nicolai and later immortalized by Johann Sebastian Bach in his famous cantata. In the finale, the chorale resounds in its full glory - performed simultaneously in two different time signatures, evoking the echo of a vast, sacred space.

This album, released in 1965, is largely regarded as a classic. Over the years, many cover versions have been made, including one by Michael Buble. In 2007, the English soul singer and songwriter Joss Stone recorded the song for the promotion campaign around the Coco Mademoiselle perfume by Chanel. Christopher Bond arranged this catchy music for brass band.

Composed October 2014 by Ray Farr, based on a religious folk-song, or psalm, from Valdres in Norway. The words to the hymn, which was written by Olof Kolmodin in 1742, warn us to 'tread warily, my soul'. Ray has adapted the music into a lively Norwegian-style dance with an equally strong warning for people not to tread on anyone's toes. The piece was first performed at the Brass in Concet competition "Siddis Brass" by Jaren Hornmusikkforening in November 2014.

A Bach chorale stands at the centre of this work (Fur deinen Thron tret ich hiermit).Anton Bruckner was one of Johann Sebastian Bach's great admirers. His work is full of the spirit of that musical genius. For Thomas Doss, it was Bruckner's spirit that always seemed to be with him while working on Spiriti. Bruckner's spirit is captured in this composition by a quote from the chorale of his Fifth Symphony at the end of the piece.The introduction, written in the style of a funeral march, already displays the first fragments of the chorale. Like splinters they are strewn throughout the first Allegro, combining and recombining in turbulent, powerful tuttipassages. As the music becomes more rambunctious, the Bach-like fragments begin to swirl around each other, only to be scattered once more.The middle-section is of a more pensive nature. The Religioso character gives the audience time to reflect. The music is meditative and the quarter-note (or crotchet) elements mimic a soul that is yearning and crying out.The third part of the piece finally leads, by way of minimalist elements and the fragments mentioned earlier, to a magnificent presentation of the Bach chorale. As the church bells ring out, one can almost hear the great masters presiding at the organ.

Written as an elegy in memory of his son Patrick and the poet Charles Hamilton Sorley - both killed in World War I - this choral anthem is regarded as the high-water mark of Irish composer Charles Wood's romantic Anglican church music. This arrangement by Jonathan Corry transcribes the work for full brass band, translating Wood's vocal counterpoint and warm harmonic colors into the brass medium.Wood set his piece to the final two stanzas of Sorley's (1895-1915) poem:This sanctuary of my soulUnwitting I keep white and whole,Unlatched and lit, if Thou should'st careTo enter or to tarry there.With parted lips and outstretched handsAnd listening ears Thy servant stands,Call Thou early, call Thou late,To Thy great service dedicate.The Latin title translates to 'I have been waiting and waiting.' The text contrasts the busyness of external life with a hidden, illuminated sanctuary kept ready within the soul.As a teacher of counterpoint and fugue at Cambridge, Wood taught notable pupils including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Arthur Bliss, Nicholas Gatty, Cecil Armstrong Gibbs, and W. A beautiful arrangement by Tim Paton of a Welsh song by W S Gwynne Williams. Created in memory of his mother, Tim has produced a wonderful version for brass band and has also included an optional vocal solo or unison choir line.Comments from the arranger:I have arranged [My Little Welsh Home] in memory of my mother. [She] was born, Doreen Davies, on 27th November 1918, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, a small town in South West Wales. She had a beautiful voice, and met my father, Bill Paton, during World War II, whilst she was singing in a troop concert at the County Theatre in her home town, and my father was the MC.Throughout her life, my mother and father entertained, and she was singing right up until the final months of her life. She spent many years in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, a seaside town in South West England, and it was here that she passed away on 20th September 2004. During the last several months of her life, she often referred to the song My Little Welsh Home:Here are the words.I am dreaming of the mountains of my homeOf the mountains where in childhood I would roamI have dwelt 'neath southern skiesWhere the summer never diesBut my heart is in the mountains of my homeI can see the little homestead on the hillI can hear the magic music of the RhyllThere is nothing to compareWith the love that once was thereIn the lonely little homestead on the hillI can see the quiet churchyard down belowWhere the mountain breezes wander to and froAnd when God my soul will keepIt is there I want to sleepWith those dear old folks that loved me long agoLooking at the words, I can see why it meant so much to her. Haverfordwest is at the foot of the Preseli Mountains, and her home and church were at the top of a hill.
