£29.99A Shropshire Lad George Butterworth arr. Joseph Knight
The tragedy of war is personified in the premature death of one of Britain's most promising composers of his age. George Butterworth was shot in the head at the battle of Somme by a German Sniper and there ended his sparkling contribution to music. Goeorge Butterworth set eleven of A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad poems in two cycles from 1909-1911. He composed his orchestral rhapsody in 1911, first calling it "The Land of Lost Content", and then calling it "The Cherry Tree" before deciding on the title "A Shropshire Lad". He wished it to be an epilogue to his song cycle and he wished it "to express the homethoughts of the exiled Lad". This arrangement for brass band was arranged in 2016 to commemorate the centenary of the composers death. This is offered as a full set with parts.

With its poignant lyrics and haunting melody, Both Sides, Now continues to resonate across generations. This evocative brass band arrangement by Andrew Wainwright was commissioned by the Fountain City Brass Band for its 2023 tour of England, including a performance at the prestigious Brass in Concert Championships. Featuring prominent solos for baritone and flugel horn, the arrangement makes full use of their lyrical warmth and tonal richness. This contemporary take by Alex McGee on the Welsh folk song Men of Harlech will be an entertaining addition to concert programmes. The arranger writes: 'Men of Harlech is perhaps one of the most well known of all traditional Welsh folk songs, but not like this. This setting was inspired by a composer who I first encountered as a 14-year-old playing in his first regional brass band, Gareth Wood. Upon learning of the death of Gareth I felt compelled to honour his memory and his music in composition. I struck upon the idea to do what he had done to the tune Sosban Fach to Men of Harlech, to take the tune as the raw material and try to craft it into something new yet recognisable, modern yet accessible. The work attempts to highlight what for me are the underlying characteristics of we Welsh; prone to melancholy but quick to find joy, contradictory, inviting, welcoming and warm but capable of housing a fierce streak of nationalistic pride. I dedicate this work to Gareth Wood and thank him for his music.' Descriptiongeminiis a virtuosicsolo for unaccompanied cornet or trumpet, inspired by the constellation of the same name and one of a small sequence of works inspired by the composer's love of astronomy.Gemini is a constellation visible in the night sky overhead in January and February, between Taurus, Cancer and Auriga. Gemini is latin for "twins", as the constellation's two brightest stars represent the mythological twins Castor and Pollux. Bizarrely, despite being twins, Castor and Pollux had two different fathers and hence two different fates and personalities. This work is dedicated to the composer's friend Lizzy Tonge. This work was written at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth for the 2011 tour of the UK by the Melbourne Staff Band culminating in a performance given at the Royal Albert Hall during ISB120 Staff Bands in Concert.The opening reflects the history, vastness and majesty of the composer's Australian homeland and introduces a motif taken from the Tomlin/Reeves song, 'The wonderful cross' which is featured in its entirety later in the work. The whole in predominantly joyous and musically easy to digest with occasional references to 'Waltzing Matilda'!

CHOOSE FREEDOM (Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
Choose Freedom is largely derived from the composers' own setting of Richard Slater's words, 'Yes, there flows a wondrous river' for SATB choir which was published in The Salvation Army's Choral Festival Series under the title 'The mighty river'.After many allusions to the song, it is eventually stated in full in the trio section. Downie's effective use of varying harmonic colours, unusual instrumental voicings and modal harmonies stand out in this rhythmically diverse march. There are quite a few loud passages in the march so conductors should savour the quieter ones!

Jon Henrik Mario Fjallgren became instantly well-known after his appearance in Sweden's Got Talent where he performed Daniels Joik written for his recently passed best friend. Fjallgren was born in Cali, Columbia in 1987 but adopted by a Swedish Sami family and lives now as a reindeer herder, singer and composer. He debuted on stage in 2003, 14 years old, and on record two years later. After the success with Got Talent, he has also participated twice in the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest.Duration: 3.45

Deep River is a spiritual of Afro-American origin. It was used in the 1929 film version of "Showboat". The melody is also sung in the closing section of Michael Tippett's oratorio "A Child of our Time" and was also adapted into the popular song "Dear Old Southland".
