£50.00The Dreaded Groove and Hook - Simon Dobson
The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round theband, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses. The piece was commissioned by JasonKatsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass In Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. Jon Henrik Mario Fjallgren became instantly well-known after his appearance in Sweden's Got Talent where he performed Daniels Joik written for his recently passed best friend. Fjallgren was born in Cali, Columbia in 1987 but adopted by a Swedish Sami family and lives now as a reindeer herder, singer and composer. He debuted on stage in 2003, 14 years old, and on record two years later. After the success with Got Talent, he has also participated twice in the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest.Duration: 3.45

This work was written as the opener for the New York Staff Band's 125th anniversary concert in Carnegie Hall in March 2012. Based on the song, 'Ever is the war cry'. the music is quite militant in nature which is a direct reflection of the text. While the composer pays homage to the past in this fitting salute, the overall musical style is decidedly that of the 21st century.

This work was written at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth for the 2011 tour of the UK by the Melbourne Staff Band culminating in a performance given at the Royal Albert Hall during ISB120 Staff Bands in Concert.The opening reflects the history, vastness and majesty of the composer's Australian homeland and introduces a motif taken from the Tomlin/Reeves song, 'The wonderful cross' which is featured in its entirety later in the work. The whole in predominantly joyous and musically easy to digest with occasional references to 'Waltzing Matilda'!

Choose Freedom is largely derived from the composers' own setting of Richard Slater's words, 'Yes, there flows a wondrous river' for SATB choir which was published in The Salvation Army's Choral Festival Series under the title 'The mighty river'.After many allusions to the song, it is eventually stated in full in the trio section. Downie's effective use of varying harmonic colours, unusual instrumental voicings and modal harmonies stand out in this rhythmically diverse march. There are quite a few loud passages in the march so conductors should savour the quieter ones!

Dance On (Je me sens bien aupres de toi) - Adams, Murtagh, Murtagh & Stellman - Len Jenkins
"Dance On" is probably best remembered in the UK by two versions. One by the Shadows which went to Number 1 in the UK Singles chart and the other by Kathy Kirby which made number 11 in the 1963 UK charts. The other side of the Channel, in France, Petula Clark recorded the song in French ("Je me sens bien aupres de toi") and Italian ("Sto volentieri con te") which made the Top 5 of the French and Italian charts. She also recorded an English version for album release on the Canadian market. The infectious rhythm will get you tapping your feet or even getting up to dance. It's a real bopping number from the 60's, and well within the capabilities of most bands. Enjoy.
