Horn Concerto No.1 1st Movement (Tenor Horn Solo with Band) Haydn arr. Wilson

Franz Joseph Haydn's Horn Concerto No.1 in D major was composed in 1762, when he was new to the Esterhazy court. It is a virtuosic concerto that showcases the beauty and range of the horn. The concerto was originally scored for solo horn and orchestra, and is one of Haydn's most popular works. Here it has been arranged by Duncan Wilson for tenor horn with brass band. His arrangement of the concerto is a faithful and effective adaptation of the original work. The movement opens with a lively tutti introduction, followed by the entrance of the solo horn. The horn plays a series of melodies and passages that are both lyrical and virtuosic. The band provides accompaniment and contrast, and the two interact in a lively dialogue. The movement builds to a climax and then concludes with a triumphant coda. Poor Parisa Love was your Achilleswas commissioned by the Flowers Band for the 2022 Brass in Concert Championships held at the Sage in Gateshead. It was written for the Soprano Cornet legendPaulRichards. The work is inspired by the tragic love story of Paris and Helen of Troy during the Trojan War. The work opens with a mournful and sombre tone, reflecting the sadness of Parisa destiny to fall in love with the queen of Sparta. The melody becomes more optimistic, reflecting the blossoming romance between Paris and Helen. However, the music returns taking a sombre turn, reflecting the awkwardness of the situation, representing the beginning of the Trojan War and Parisa tragic downfall.

This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature showcasing the front row was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. Island Whirl (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Island Whirl was commissioned by Margaret Milligan who wanted a brand new piece of music composed as a present for Ian, her husband for his 70th birthday. Ian Milligan is a keen and dedicated musician and he is the musical director of Callendar Brass, based in Callendar near Stirling in Scotland.Margaret contacted me about the possibility of composing a short lively piece which had a Scottish theme that would be ideal for Callendar Brass Band and any other ensemble to get their teeth into. This piece takes its inspiration from the traditional Scottish folk song 'An Eriskay Love Lilt' which is a particular favourite of both Margaret and Ian.With thunderous Celtic drums the piece opens in a whirlwind of sound with fanfare brass and an off-stage soloist that can perform using either the cornet or trumpet. After the exciting opening, the brass and drums die away to allow the off-stage soloist to air the traditional tune 'An Eriskay Love Lilt'.The beautiful haunting melody, keeping its originality throughout undergoes a series of changes in the accompanying harmonic material before dying away to allow the Celtic drums to return. The percussion whip the band into a frenzy as the piece gets faster and faster. Just prior to the final notes the band diminuendo to allow one last closing statement from the Eriskay Love Lilt lead by the off-stage soloist before the ensemble charge to a dramatic close.When performing this piece I would recommend the off-stage soloist taking a position somewhere in the audience, so they can almost feel part of the performance. In addition, with the two tom-tom parts that represent the Celtic drums, bands should make the most of showcasing them by getting the two drummers out to the front of the band to perform. The ideal stage position would be with the players set up in stereo with one player in front of the soprano cornet and the other in front of the solo trombone.With the various choreographed movements from both the off-stage soloist and the percussionists. This piece is a great addition to any concert repertoire and is an ideal showcase for bands who want to try something a little different.I wish Ian at 70 years young, all the very best with his music making in the many years to come and I hope this piece, composed especially for him and Callender Brass brings them many years of musical enjoyment.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Dances and Arias (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance - Aria I - Dance (scherzo) - Aria II - Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation.The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.
