Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 (allegro) - J.S Bach - John Abbott

The "Brandenburg Concertos" were composed and dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, however it seems now they were never actually played for him. This 1st movement has been kilfully arranged as a trio for Soprano Cornet and 2 Bb Cornets (solo cornet, and repiano). This is sure to test the strongest of players, utilising the soprano's high register and making work of the low register on the Bb cornets. As well as keeping the band entertained with running semi-quavers (and some wonderful intervals for the basses!!!) This certainly is a hard piece to perform for the three soloists, but its well worth the challenge.

The "Brandenburg Concertos" were composed and dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, however it seems now they were never actually played for him. This 3rd movement has been kilfully arranged as a trio for Soprano Cornet and 2 Bb Cornets (solo cornet, and repiano). This is sure to test the strongest of players, starting with the famous trumpet opening. The Baritones, Euphoniums and Basses also play a very important role in this arrangement. This certainly is a hard piece to perform for the three soloists, but its well worth the challenge.

Main Theme from Piano Concerto Number 2

The second movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto is arguably one of his most endearingly popular pieces. Written between 1900 and 1901, it marks a turning point in the composer's life - for years he was riddled with self-doubt and suffering with depression, the second piano concerto is believed to be the breaking of his writers block. The concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, a physician who had done much to restore Rachmaninoff's self-confidence. in 1975, Eric Carmen adapted the second movement for his ballad: "All by Myself". The following arrangement was produced for Wingates Band's appearance at the 2015 Brass in Concert competition at the Sage Gatesehead. The theme of the programme presented was 'Alice in Wonderland' and the following arrangement was used to represent 'The Mock Turtle'. The other pieces presented were:'Mad March Hare's March and the Well Crazy TeaParty' (available late 2017), 'Piano Concerto Number 2 by Rachmaninov' and 'Dreaming' by Schumann (available from Cantatio Music).

    Diamond Concerto - Philip Sparke

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village of Morschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and concert band (AMP 354-010).

Canzon duodecimi toni ?? 10 no 2 (1597) - Gabrieli: Eric Crees Performing Edition

A work which clearly looks towards the baroque concerto grosso with its repeated ritornello and its virtuoso writing for two soloists.Gabrieli is one of the truly great composers but sadly neglected. We hope this edition will bring these magnificent pieces to a wider audience, especially the young.• Each set contains a score and parts for brass, woodwind and string instruments to allow performances by practically any combination as well as brass only.• This new Performing Edition of Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae and Canzoni e Sonate was prepared for the recording by the LSO Brass on Naxos Records:Vol 1 - 8553609Vol 2 - 8553873Vol 3 - 8554129"...the playing is superb...three CDs which embody all of Gabrieli's instrumental ensemble works, the first such collection in the world".....'Musician'"...scrupulously prepared new edition".....'BBC Music Magazine'"...notes, both scholarly and informative...an exciting series".....'Guardian'

Concerto Grosso - Score and Parts - Derek Bourgeois

About this new digitized editionThis edition was digitized in 2012 by Espen Wallacher Haukas, former principal percussion in Manger Musikklag, with help from his fellow band members Tina Kvamme and Christian Breistein. Together with conductors Martin Philip Winter and Philip Harper, the handwritten material was proof-read and corrected to make a new version, performed at the Norwegian Brass Band Championship of 2014. We compared the original ten-piece material to the brass band version and altered some notes/articulation to match the original. There were also some bars of percussion that enhanced the lines of the music in the ten-piece version that has been added in the percussion parts (with Derek's permission). The only change that has been done is to write the Flugelhorn solo at number 39 in 4/4 instead of 2/4; sounding just the same but having a calmer and more relaxed visual expression, to make it easier for the performer to read.
