Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. £41.34Allegro Spirito from Symphony No.2 (Brass Band) Borodin arr. Harold Burgmayer
Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony in B minor dates from the years 1869-76, a time when he was also working on his enduring opera Prince Igor. Flavors of the exotic and outdoor celebration seemed to have spilled over from the opera in this brilliant sonata movement. Borodin seldom quotes Russian folk tunes, but his graceful melodic lines are permeated with the spirit of his native song, supported by iridescent harmonies and bright colors. This arrangement for brass band was premiered by The Salvation Army's New York Staff Band, with Ronald Waiksnoris conducting, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on 11 April 2001. This complete transcription of the Finale movement of Borodin's Second Symphony has an approximate duration of 6.40 minutes. To alternatively utilize the piece as an opener, a cut from bar 173 to 272 is indicated with Coda signs, reducing the piece to 4.30 seconds. £33.82Bagatelle No.25 in A Minor - Fur Elise (Brass Band) Beethoven arr. Olaf Ritman
Perhaps the most well-known piano piece by Ludwig van Beethoven, Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor (written around 1810) is better known under its subtitle 'Fur Elise'. Even to this day it is still unknown who Elise was, with at least four theories claiming to tell the story. It might have been one of Beethoven's students or Therese Malfatti, a young lady who got much attention from him. The theory is that Beethoven's autograph Ludwig Nohl could not decipher his handwriting and might have read Elise instead of Therese. Nevertheless the piece has become extremely popular over the last two centuries and is often the very first real classical piece a beginner pianist goes to. Many classical pieces have been transcribed in contemporary fashion for brass bands in recent times, with Toccata in D Minor by J.S. Bach arranged by Ray Farr being the most popular and more recently Vivaldi's first part of Winter from The Four Seasons arranged by Philip Harper. This arrangement of Fur Elise fits in this series perfectly and seeks to bring a smile to its listeners. The last two bars are a direct tribute to Ray Farr's aforementioned arrangement of Toccata.
