Early struggles and hardships of the first settlers are described in The New Challenge but the true story of Australia over the last 200 years is one of success and Celebration ends the piece in triumph.Duration: 11.30 mins

This piece was commissioned by the Dutch province of Groningen for the celebrations commemorating the liberation festivities in 1987. In the composition, the dream of a world without war is symbolized. It is the first composition in a series in which Jacob de Haan combines concert music with pop music in a style, which reminds one of film music. Later compositions in which he has reaped much success with the same formula in style are Oregon, La Storia and Utopia.Duration: 8.00

Ae Fond Kiss, by the Scottish poet Robert Burns, is widely recognised as being one of the most poignant songs of lost love ever written. A brief affair with a Mrs Agnes Craig McLehose (known to Burns as Nancy) ended with her decision to join her estranged husband in Jamaica. Her parting gift to Burns was a lock of her hair which he had set in a ring. His gift to her included the poem, the first verse of which reflects Burns' feelings of resignation and despair:Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee!

Ravel's one-movement orchestral piece?Bolero?was written in 1928. It epitomises Ravel's preoccupation with restyling and reinventing dance movements. It was also one of the last pieces he composed before illness forced him into retirement. The original version has a duration of between 15 and 18 minutes, depending on the tempo set by the conductor. This brass band arrangement is significantly shorter, lasting a mere 4 minutes or so. There is also an 'extra' ending, first used in the musical sensation?Blast! which almost guarantees addtional applause at a concert! Duration: 4:30

Peter Warlock's set of set of six dances in renaissance style, Capriol Suite, is by far his most famous work. The suite consists of Basse-Danse, a lively dance for older folk; a stately Pavane; a delicate, yet lively Tordion; Bransles (pronounced 'Brawl'), a fast country dance which works its way into a frenzy, continuously building in speed and excitement; Pieds-en-l'air, with its beautifully serene lines and Mattachins, an exhilarating sword dance with its driving rhythm, culminating in violent dissonances bringing the piece to a spirited close. This is a new arrangement suitable for any band, including those in the 4th Section that relish a challenge. Percussion has been added in all but one of the movements, and is for two players. Wer nur den lieben Gott l?sst walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled 'Trostlied' literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach's use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan's arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer's original intention - a song of consolation. 03:10

Dreams and Dances is a substantial seven minute solo for one of the most characteristic of the brass band's instruments. It begins slowly and dreamily, with a flugel line encompassing both lyrical and florid styles, before moving via a short cadenza to a set of dances in a quick 6/8 time. The solo part would be a challenge for any player, but the accompaniment parts should he manageable by all.
