Lloyd (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Howard, Cuthbert - Coles, Bramwell

The first presentation of the theme can be used for the purpose of accompanying congregational singing. At Section A the second presentation of the tune appears in the key of the dominant, the melody being given throughout to Solo Horn, with First Horn, First Trombone, Soprano and Flugel reinforcing the melody in the various phrases. Incidentally, see that the players do not break these phrases; it should be possible to take the four bars in one breath quite easily. Take due care of the light and shade which should be delicately applied. In the last bar the music gathers strength as we pass back into the original key for the last verse; pay particular attention to the part allotted to Second Baritone and Euphonium which needs to be slightly stressed. For the last appearance of the tune at Section B the full Band is used, apart from the third phrase which is given solo by Solo Comet with a light accompaniment above a bass pedal. Notice the rit. operating from the end of the eleventh bar and also the short swell effect on the fourth beat of the fourteenth bar.

The Binding of the Wolf - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

This piece was commissioned by Nordhordland Brass Seminar in 1990 and written for a youth band. The title referes to a story from norse mythology. "The Binding of the Wolf" is not a programmatic piece of music, but I felt that there was a kind of coherence between the music and the dramatic story: "...The wolf Fenrir was one of the demonic offspring of Loki, and as he grew up in Asgard among the gods, he became so huge and fierce that only Tyr was willing to feed him. It was decided that he must be bound, and Odin in his wisdom caused the cunning dwarfs to forge a chain which could not be broken. It was made from the invisible and yet potent powers ofthe world, such as the roots of a mountain, the noise of a moving cat, the breath of a fish. When completed, this chain seemed to be no more than a silken cord, but the wolf refused to let it be laid upon him unless one of the gods would put a hand between his jaws as a pledge that it was harmless. Only Tyr was prepared to do this, and when the wolf found that the chain was unbreakable, the gods rejoiced, but Tyr lost his hand. The binding of the wolf may be seen as a means of protecting the world of men, as well as that of the gods, from destruction. The story of the god losing his hand appears to be one of the fundamental myths of nothern Europe..."

Three Pieces from Czechoslovakia - Leos Janacek

This is the music of Leos Janacek (1854-1928) – exciting, powerful, emotive, impassioned, unpredictable, and many other definitions all rolled into one! Janacek was little known in Britain until the 1960’s, when the conductor Charles Macherras introduced his unique music and opera to the western audience. His orchestral Sinfonietta was an instant hit. Janacek has since been one of the featured composers in the ‘Proms’.The three pieces which I have arranged for brass band are INTRODUCTION, ORGAN SOLO and INTRADA from Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass. They work equally well together or on their own, as they each have their own identity. They can be purchased together or separately.1. INTRODUCTIONA great ‘starter’ for the first or second half of a concert. 2. ORGAN SOLOThis is a ‘must’ if you want to impress your audience – every section of the band is incredibly busy, (although they can be assured that they do have time to breath)! 3. INTRADAThis piece, (and no.1 “Introduction”), both contain that ‘fanfare’ like quality which Janacek is famous for in his Sinfonietta.

    Clair de Lune

Clair de Lune is a well-known piano piece by French impressionist composer, Claude Debussy. In this new brass band arrangement, Clair de Lune is full of magic, warmth and drama. This cornet solo, as recorded by Jim Hayes on his Debut studio album, Dial M for Midnight, Clair de Lune will show-off your star principal cornet player, allow them to display their warm tone, control and musicality in this well-known piece. The arrangement itself is not a straight transcription as the arranger feels the original is a piano piece written specifically for the technique of the piano. Instead, a whole new sound world is created, with subtle harmonic devices, and some not-so-subtle harmonic devices, such as a Walton-style modal chord. One of the McFadyen techniques is in the sudden juxtaposition of extreme changes in style and tone, and this technique is heard to full effect in this brass band arrangement of Clair de Lune. This is particularly noticeable in the transition from the big and dark finale transitioning into the final closing bars; it's quite an extraordinary and heart-pounding effect that takes your breath away. The final bars are inspired from a track by Chris Botti, where he performs a long high note above the accompaniment.
