The first presentation of the theme can be used for the purpose of accompanying congregational singing. At Section A the second presentation of the tune appears in the key of the dominant, the melody being given throughout to Solo Horn, with First Horn, First Trombone, Soprano and Flugel reinforcing the melody in the various phrases. Incidentally, see that the players do not break these phrases; it should be possible to take the four bars in one breath quite easily. Take due care of the light and shade which should be delicately applied. In the last bar the music gathers strength as we pass back into the original key for the last verse; pay particular attention to the part allotted to Second Baritone and Euphonium which needs to be slightly stressed. For the last appearance of the tune at Section B the full Band is used, apart from the third phrase which is given solo by Solo Comet with a light accompaniment above a bass pedal. Notice the rit. operating from the end of the eleventh bar and also the short swell effect on the fourth beat of the fourteenth bar.

St Magnus (Brass Band - Study Score) - Downie, Kenneth
This music is a set of variations on the tune known as St Magnus, which is attributed to Jeremiah Clarke. Most people will associate it with Thomas Kelly's hymn which begins: "The Head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now". The tune is very simple, consisting of just two, four-bar phrases. Neither is there much in the way of rhythmic variety, every note being a crotchet with the exception of two quavers, and the last note in each phrase. Within such a simple structure, however, lies considerable strength.

An arrangement by Tim Paton of this Rachmaninoff favourite for brass band.Comments from Tim:I first heard the Rachmaninoff Prelude in G minor when my brother, (Dr) Rod Paton, used to play it on the piano. The martial sound of the opening theme caught my imagination, and I knew then that this piece would sound magnificent if played by a brass band - if you like the music of Rachmaninoff, then you will love this piece! That spectacular sound that we all know, with busy, melodic bass lines, and a middle section in his well known 'romantic' style - I could already hear the euphonium playing those rippling arpeggios. In response to the enthusiasm for this magnificent piece, I have lightheartedly commented that maybe he wrote it for brass band, but there wasn't one available, so he did it for piano instead!Look and Listen (Score-reading digital sound sample):

The Giddy Goat - Traditional Swiss - Daniel von Siebenthal
The Giddy Goat is a silly folk song that everyone knows in Switzerland. It is about a white goat that does not want to get milked, so she kicks the milker. Thinking that this is because the goat is white, the owner decides that he will buy a brown one instead. From there on, people make up their own verses in which the goat is often replaced with past loves, enemies, and anyone or anything worthy of ridicule. Daniel, the arranger, lives in Gstaad in the Saanen district and the "Saanen goat" is a breed of white goat known throughout the world. As a farm boy, he did his share of goat milking and received the occasional hoof under his chin for his trouble. So, this piece is a tribute to a local breed that became world-famous, especially in America where the tune also meets its counterpart Billy Grogan's Goat (a similar silly song). The Giddy Goat should always be played as a "silly song" reflecting the goat's nature; capricious and cantankerous. The low bass line is important in Swiss folk music and should approximate to a plucked string-bass whose strings are dampened, to give it a pulsating feel. Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D is a cornerstone of the Baroque period, a work widely known and frequently heard at concerts and events globally. This brass band arrangement by Steven Ponsford offers a new perspective on this classical piece. The arrangement begins with the familiar ground bass theme, followed by a series of four-bar motifs. Ponsford has developed these motifs, distributing them across the band to give interest to every section of the band. A short fugue is included in the middle of the piece, referencing a style Pachelbel contributed to. The majority of the music is accompanied by a rock beat, aiming to create a fresh and lighthearted interpretation of the original work. This will be an ideal item for both concert and entertainment contest programmes.
