Durkle Bandrydge Suite - Bruce Fraser

Durkle Bandrydge is the name of the composers imaginary world, but it could very well be anyones invisible dream world with a different name. In this very versatile suite by Bruce Fraser, 8 characters are featured, each with its ownpeculiarities, making Durkle Bandrydge such a colourful place. Do these characters differ that much from us? That is for you to find out! In the last part, all characters come together in a special way.Durkle Bandrydge exists at the end ofyour street. It is invisible to humans, but Durkle Bandrygators can watch us with great interest. The music will introduce you to some of the characters who live in this unusual place. The parts: Somnanbulyss, who is a giant trollguarding the entrance to Durkle Bandryde. At least, he is supposed to, but he tends to sleep most of the time. His music is therefore very slow moving and sleepy. Long Gwysteen is a tall, mysterious, and somehow sophisticated character, who walls around with a shell on his back. His music glides along rather gracefully. Squelfitch is a rather unpleasant and smelly character who lives in a bog, which is why his music sounds rather slimy and a bit like trying to walkthrough quicksand. Perfydlia is a meddling old woman, who gossips about everybody and squeals with sudden delight at the small exciting bits of tittletattle about others in the village. In the music you can hear her sudden little squealsof delight. Maryann Lovely is a beautiful young lady, graceful, gorgeous, absolutely devine, and her music is obviously just the same. Thistledoo Nicely is a lively character who spends and spends and spends with her credit card, buying the latest fashion and never worries about having to pay the bills. Her music reflects her excitement when shopping and het 'happy go lucky' approach to life. Marsyn Edginton is the Lord of the manor, the richest man in town, the'big cheese', the man with all the power and, of course, the biggest house. He is very grand and his music like he could be a king. Jimmy McScotsmyn is a red haired scotsman wearing tartan cap. He misses his home country terribly and eatslots of shortbread, oatcakes, scotch eggs, porridge and drinks an enormous amount of Scotch Wisky, which helps him to have fond memories of the kind of music he would like to dance to when he was a younger man. His favourite dance is a Jig andthis is the music he remembers. Grand March of the Durkle Bandrydgators. We hope that you have enjoyed meeting these characters from Drukle Bandrydge and would invite you to listen to all the villagers now march along in a grand parade -it is a pity that you can not see them, what is a wonderful sight. If you listen carefully, you will hear the melodies which belong to the characters as they march past. Oh what a grand spectacle!

A Jingle Fantasy - James McFadyen

This dark tale of Jingle Bells for brass band by James McFadyen is sure to give your seasonal concerts a touch of modernism, and will certainly create a bit of a talking point at your Christmas concerts. Although not immediately obvious as one to put on your public programmes, progressive bands will enjoy putting together a varied programme and including arrangements that shine a new light on old classics.History of Jingle BellsOriginally entitled One Horse Open Sleigh when composed in 1857 by American composer and songwriter James L. Pierpont (1822-1893), Jingle Bells has gone on to become one of the most recognisable Christmas songs of all time.Pierpont's lyrics remain largely untouched, but as you will notice from the following original text, there are a few differences:Dashing tho' the snow,In a one-horse open sleigh,O'er the hills we go,Laughing all the way;Bells on bob tail ring,Making spirits bright,Oh what sport to ride and singA sleighing song tonight.Special Features of this ArrangementIn typical McFadyen style, the original of Jingle Bells as-we-know-it is flipped on its head. The most arresting difference is the speed. The piece is a lot slower than the original, but there are numerous musical devices which keep the music pacing along, including short arpeggiated motifs on baritones and euphoniums. The overall sound of this arrangement of Jingle Bells is dark although, the most skillful of conductors will see the poetry in the music. There is much storytelling to tell here, which builds to a rather serious finale and then closes down with a series of effervescent chords in the lower band. For those looking for a more traditional arrangement of Jingle Bells, one can be found in James McFadyen's lovely medley of Christmas tunes, Christmas Sweets.

    Abide with Me

This world-famous hymn is taken from original melody by William Henry Monk (1823-1889), known as Eventide. In this brass band arrangement of Abide with Me, the hymn is first heard as brass quartet, then the rest of the band join, building to a powerful and emotional close. What are the lyrics to Abide with Me?The first verse of Abide with Me is usually sung as follows:Abide with me, fast falls the eventideThe darkness deepens Lord, with me abideWhen other helpers fail and comforts fleeHelp of the helpless, oh, abide with me.Performance Hints & TipsAt the beginning, it may considered to have the quartet of players stand at the front of the band to play the opening verse, or have them sat to one side of the band.Although tutti band comes-in in the second verse, remember that there is considerable build-up to come, and to reserve the full-power playing for when it's truly required. In the final verse, there is many interesting strands of counterpoint and interest; always ensure that as each point of interest is sounded, attention be drawn to it. It will not be difficult for the conductor to see the connecting strands dispersed throughout the band colours. The final chord does not sound as if it has resolved. This is deliberate. For maximum sonic effect, play it strongly and confidently as if it were a fully-resolved cadence. Some conductors may wish to add an allargando on the semiquavers that lead into the last note.
