Studio-Pop - Kees Vlak
Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The first movement, entitled Marching on a String, is an energetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next, the charming Dreaming of Summer has been composed in three-four time - which is quite unusual in modern pop music. The inspiration for the third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple, dancing movements can be recognised in the music. The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern, attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along on a night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The typically Spanish chords and the stirring, high-spirited rhythm provide an exuberant closing to Studio-Pop.

Commissioned by Manger School Band and their conductor (at that time) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. He wanted a calm, slow piece of music. Nocturne means 'night music'. It does not reflect a particular dream, but the feeling you get when you?re day-dreaming: you are in the middle of beeing awake and asleep. Geschreven in opdracht van Manger School Band en hun dirigent (op dat moment) Bj?rn Sagstad in 1990. Hij wilde een rustig, langzaam stuk muziek. Nocturne betekent 'nacht muziek'. Het gaat dus niet een bepaalde droom, maar het gevoel dat je krijgt wanneer je aan het dagdromen bent: je bent in het midden van wakker zijn en slapen.

This single from Ritchie Valens from 1958 is originally a Spanish song from Mexican folklore. Years later it was picked by Rolling Stone magazine as the only non-English song in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list at number 345. In 1987 it was covered by the American band Los Lobos, for the film La Bamba, about the life of Ritchie Valens. This arrangement has been made for flexible setting, and is suitable for a developed student band.

The original Ding-a-Dong was performed, in keeping with tradition, with the accompaniment of a large orchestra. 'Mixed Bag' stands midway between a collection and a hotchpotch. It is a colourful compilation of four completely different pieces, each with its own specific character. The first part is called 'Tanguillo' : as its name suggests, this Spanish dance is related to the Tango. In the next part, 'Maybe next time ....' a repeated bass line (Passacaglia) can be heard, first solo, but thereafter gradually the other instruments join in. The third part forms a huge contrast did the former part have a Baroque atmosphere, 'Rock Hard' seems to have come directly from the Rock 'n Roll era, reminding us of stars such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley. The finale is acheerful, inciting movement called 'Gypsy Dance'.
