Poor Parisa Love was your Achilleswas commissioned by the Flowers Band for the 2022 Brass in Concert Championships held at the Sage in Gateshead. It was written for the Soprano Cornet legendPaulRichards. The work is inspired by the tragic love story of Paris and Helen of Troy during the Trojan War. The work opens with a mournful and sombre tone, reflecting the sadness of Parisa destiny to fall in love with the queen of Sparta. The melody becomes more optimistic, reflecting the blossoming romance between Paris and Helen. However, the music returns taking a sombre turn, reflecting the awkwardness of the situation, representing the beginning of the Trojan War and Parisa tragic downfall.

Enduring Faith was commissioned by Christopher Ward and the Five Lakes Silver Band and is a lyrical work for brass band that explores the intersection of hope, resilience, and conviction. Designed with a focus on melodic clarity and expressive phrasing, the composition moves through a series of nuanced emotional shifts - ranging from quiet, reflective passages to moments of expansive lyricism and affirmation. The harmonic structure travels through several keys, serving as a musical metaphor for the changing seasons of life. Throughout the piece, the texture is enriched by featured soloists from across the ensemble, including flugel horn, cornet, euphonium, baritone, and trombone. This work is dedicated to Doug and Stephanie Bayne, long-standing members of the Five Lakes Silver Band, in recognition of their commitment to their community and their steadfast support of the ensemble. It was recorded by the Five Lakes Silver Band on their 2025 album, Legacy. Few melodies possess the haunting beauty and instant recognizability of The Lonely Shepherd. Originally composed by legendary bandleader James Last for a solo project titled Filmmusik Ohne Filme (Film Music Without Films), the track eventually found its home on the 1977 album Memories of Russia. It was this recording that catapulted pan flutist Gheorghe Zamfir to international superstardom, reaching the Top 25 on the German charts and becoming a permanent fixture in the global musical lexicon. While the original album title suggested "films without movies," the track didn't stay "homeless" for long. Its evocative, melancholic atmosphere has made it a favorite for directors across decades and continents. This brass band arrangement preserves the ethereal quality of the original, the soaring melodic lines and rhythmic intensity of the finale offering a brilliant showcase of phrasing and emotional depth. At The Going Down Of The Sun is a deeply moving musical tribute dedicated to the courage, resilience, and ultimate sacrifice of those who have defended the nation of Australia. Inspired by the heroic legacy of the 2/25th Battalion and their storied defense of the Kokoda Track during World War II, this composition serves as a solemn reminder of the immense gratitude owed to its fallen heroes. This piece is born from a legacy of service. It was composed in honor of Keith Fitzpatrick, who enlisted in the AIF on November 28, 1941. Keith served two tours in New Guinea, spending 359 days on the treacherous Kokoda Track. Keith Fitzpatrick lived to celebrate his 100th birthday in 2023, leaving behind a profound legacy through his wife of 67 years, Valda, and three generations of descendants. At The Going Down Of The Sun captures this spirit of endurance and devotion. Composer Nathanael Watchorn revisits a melody and harmonic framework originally conceived for an unrealised project - material that, even at its inception, carried the gentle strength and stillness of a benedictory chorus. Sensing its innate sense of calm and assurance, Watchorn sought to give the music new life through words that would illuminate its emotional core. £33.64Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' (Brass Band - Full Score Print) Andrew Wainwright
This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion.
