3rd Section Test Piece 2016 National Finals of the British Brass Band Championship.The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. A remote Carmarthenshire lake shrouded in Welsh legend has been named as one of the 1,000 must-see sights across the globe by an influential travel bible. Llyn y Fan Fach, 12km southeast of Llandovery in the Brecon Beacons, is the only spot in Wales to make the list, which was put together by Lonely Planet. "This isolated drop of blue, beneath a cirque of raw Welsh hills, is enchanting - and enchanted," Lonely Planet's 1,000 Ultimate Sights tells readers. The story goes that in the 13th Century, a farmer grazing cattle on the nearby slopes spotted the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. She was a fairy maiden, who agreed to marry him on one proviso - he must not hit her more than twice. In time, the inevitable happened - three strikes, and the otherworldly wife disappeared back into the lake, taking her magic cows with her. This work, for flugel horn and brass band, is reflective in nature, portraying the dismay of the man in losing his wife for his own selfishness. The work was written for and premiered by Rob Nesbitt & City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Band, at the 2019 Welsh Open Entertainment Contest in Porthcawl, Wales.

'The Cave of Wonders' was composed for the Foden's Band's winning performance at the 2023 Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Glasshouse, Gateshead where the band performed a set of music inspired by the Disney classic, 'Aladdin'. Near the start of the film, Aladdin enters the Cave of Wonders to retrieve the golden lamp and is instructed to touch nothing but the lamp. His pet monkey Abu grabs some of the surplus jewels triggering the cave's collapse. Trapped, Aladdin and Abu explore the cave, discovering and releasing a magic carpet. The carpet instructs Aladdin to rub the lamp as their only hope of escape and in doing so releases a mighty Genie from it's captivity.

DIFFICULTY: 4th+. DURATION: 4'30". Recorded on: Violet Volume 1 (Brass Band Willebroek). 'Mirror of the Heart' was composed for Belgian Cornet soloist Lode Violet for performances and recordings with the Wallberg Band (CH) and Brass Band Willebroek (B). The inspiration for the title of the work is taken from a collection of poems by the same name of late American poet Sara Teasdale (1884 - 1933); the centre of which are 54 deeply personal poems which - as a result - remained unpublished until after Teasdale's death. This work aims to reflect that particularly personal and reflective feel portrayed within the 'heart' of this collection.
