Finale - Suite No.3 (Brass Band) Tchaikovsky arr. Ruben Schmidt

This arrangement by Ruben Schmidt is the exciting polonaise finale from the last movement of Tchaikovsky's thrilling Suite No.3 in G Major for Orchestra. This was first performed in Saint Petersburg on January 12th, 1885, at the fifth symphony concert of the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Hans von Bulow. The suite also was Tchaikovsky's first American success when it was performed by the New York Symphony Society at Carnegie Hall on May 7,1891. First intended as its own symphony, it became the most played and most successful of Tchaikovsky's four suites. The finale of the last movement is an invigorating polonaise dance to finish the suite. Tchaikovsky often enjoyed conducting this final movement as an independent work himself. The First Nowell (Brass Band, opt. Choir & Piano) Traditional arr. Barrie Gott

This charming setting by Australian composer Barrie Gott is of the favourite carol The First Nowell. Although this version is for brass band, choir and piano, it is orchestrated such that it will work for standalone brass band. The arranger writes: 'I have always been fascinated with the words and music of this majestic carol. It was first written for choir and piano and then orchestrated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor's Carols with the Queensland Pops Orchestra. A further arrangement for brass band was prepared for a Salvation Army event. The setting is for four verses (1,2,5 and 6) and tells the Gospel story in a nutshell. Ever since the first performance in April 1742 in Dublin, Ireland, Messiah has been the iconic Christian oratorio. It is a work of genius with lyrics skillfully taken from the Bible by Charles Jennens and timeless music by G. F. Handel, and has been at the top of the Western musical canon for close to 300 years. For unto us a child is born comes roughly halfway through Part One of the oratorio and is one of its most popular choruses, being the prophecy of the birth of a Messiah (Jesus) found in Isaiah chapter nine. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. The Three Kings (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Cornelius arr. Wainwright

This beautiful arrangement of the much loved tenor solo The Three Kings was made for the GUS Band and euphonium soloist Mark Giles, for the CD recording Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright (2013). The Three Kings, or Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar, is a Christmas carol by the German composer Peter Cornelius. He set Die Konige for a vocal soloist, accompanied by Philip Nicolai's hymn Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern ('How Brightly Shines the Morning Star'), which he erroneously thought was an Epiphany hymn. In fact, it is an Advent hymn in which the morning star is an allegory for the arrival of Jesus, not the Star of Bethlehem. In Cornelius' original second setting, the accompaniment was played on a piano but the English organist Ivor Atkins later arranged the accompaniment for choir, with the choir singing the words of the original hymn. The carol describes the visit of the Biblical Magi to the Infant Jesus during the Nativity and is also used as an Epiphany anthem.
