Three Gentle Giantswas commissioned by Grenland International Brass Festival as a test piece for the 2nd division in 2008.Three Gentle Giants. The three giants each have their own monologue which leads into a conversation. They gather recognition and respect from each others views as the dialogue evolves. Eventually they find a more nutual and singular expression to their conversation.The giants are old with a long life behind them. This can be heard through a slow, melancholic waltz. A waltz is dance commonly linked to festiveoccasions, such as weddings, but for the giants it holds much more significance. It gives room to think about people they have met, placesthey have been, and all that life has given them.Quietly it ends, more or less like it began. Several of the values in a school band have a positive impact on how musicians grow and mature. They learn about culture and discipline, as well as experiencing unity and mastery. A school band always has a goal, and achieving goals together, without reserves, is priceless. High ambitions and a common will to improve are recognizable in many school bands. In my opinion Skodvin Skulemusikk got these values: unity, affiliation, effort and ambition.The piece portrays the echo that rings in the hall before the applause after a concert. The echo in the hallways during breaks, or in the rehearsal room during rehearsal. The echo, or consequence, of all the work that is done by both musicians and parents. The echo of a unity and belonging that can last a lifetime.

The composer depicts five little paintings which were hanging on the wall of the spare room of his grandparents' house when he used to stay there as a young boy. Each painting had its own place and story. Even a replica of Rembrandt's Night Watch was there and his eyes were always focussed on the person with the drums. Imaginative music of high educational value. Playing together, articulation, and playing in tune are familiar, but useful, ingredients of this varied piece.
