This is a light concert piece which has been arranged in the trad jazz style. It's a little bit of New Orleans for Brass Band. It starts with the traditional slow statement of the theme and then cornets followed by the lower section of the band stating the theme in a faster jazz style. Then there are the 'solo' sections, which are in fact features for different sections of the band. Every section gets its time in the spotlight. Great fun and a great concert piece for any venue.

This Gustav Holst piece contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure. It has been arranged here for the full brass band and has had light percussion parts added to complement. It starts with the band in full chord and then pairs down to solo instruments playing Good Christian Men monophonically. This piece has all of the essential elements of Holst's harmony and tension while retaining the joy of Christmas. It ends quietly and reflectively and works very well in large acoustics such as a Church building or large town hall.

This comes from a set of seasonal motets for choir. Mendelssohn composed these motets during the mid-1840's for the Cathedral Choir of Berlin. Weihnachten literally means "Christmas" and is a celebratory piece. It has been scored for full brass band without percussion and lasts for less than two minutes. It makes a fantastic opening showpiece to any half of a Christmas concert.

Rooted in the sacred stillness of a French village on Christmas Eve, this suite by Martin Cordner draws upon traditional carols that have echoed through centuries of candlelit chapels and midnight vigils. Each movement offers a window into the Nativity story: I. Mystery: Noel Nouvelet (Christmas Comes Anew) opens with modal wonder, evoking the anticipation of Christ's coming and the quiet awe of Advent. II. Cradle: Entre le boeuf et l'ane gris (Between the Ox and the Grey Donkey) rests in pastoral tenderness, where the newborn Savior lies between humble beasts, watched over by angels and the Virgin. III. Joy: Il est ne, le divin enfant (He is born, the Divine Infant) bursts forth in celebration, proclaiming the divine birth with rustic dance and jubilant praise. Together, these carols form a musical triptych - moving from mystery to intimacy to exultation. Three Carols at Midnight invites listeners to step into the hush of a French Noel, where the sacred story is told not only in word, but in melody, memory, and light. Love Eternal was arranged by Gavin Lamplough for trombone virtuoso Isobel Daws to perform in a special concert with the Melbourne Staff Band to honour its Bandmaster Ken Waterworth, on the occasion of his retirement after 30 years of leading the band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the trombone to be enjoyed by the listener. £67.34Armistice at Flanders Fields (Brass Band) Dwayne Bloomfield
This poignant and powerful work for brass band by Dwayne Bloomfield describes the day peace was announced to end World War I. The piece was written in 2023 to be played by bands around the world to mark Armistice Day. The composer writes: 'Unless you were there, it's impossible to imagine what it must have been like the day peace was announced ending World War I. The feelings soldiers experienced, who after years of fighting and suffering, to know it was over and they would return home to see family and loved ones again. This piece tries to tell their story. The work begins by approaching the front, distant artillery and battle sounds heard while the carnage and loss of lives was already known to the world. The band builds as we enter the thick of battle, the death and destruction, the conditions faced and the loss of hope of ever surviving. The next section, in 7/8 time, reflects the two sides fighting - both sides attacking and defending with mostly little result, but for the loss of more lives. Two euphoniums then depict the news and hope of peace talks. However, fighting did continue right up to the very end and on the last day there would be another 2,738 casualties. The Canadians were still battling to capture the town of Mons that morning. A song is sung in reflection of the estimated 5.5 million allied soldiers who lost their lives during World War I, then a clock ticks down the final minutes. The last three known casualties are depicted with French soldier Augustin Trebuchon, killed at 10:45am by a single shot as he rushed down the trenches to spread the news of coming peace; Canadian George Lawrence Price killed by a sniper round at 10:58am at the battle of Mons, and lastly a machine gun burst that killed American Henry Gunther, who is believed to have fallen on the 11th hour. Bells then toll ringing around the world announcing the end of the war. After years of war, it must have been jubilation for the families at home knowing their loved ones would be returning to them. The band builds with a hymn for peace as a final tribute to those who fought, before the piece resides with one of the most dreaded sounds at that time, the knock on the door from a telegram delivery boy or better known then as the Angels of Death. It wasn't just the 2,738 families from the casualties of the last day who would receive such a knock, but many more who expected their loved ones to be returning home would instead find out they were instead killed in the last weeks. So close. Driving around the battlefields today one comes across many intersections in the countryside which have cemetery signposts pointing in every direction. While the last post sounds in ceremonies today, this last bugle call instead depicts the horrors, devastation and death the soldiers faced during the war and right up the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Armistice at Flanders Fields.' Written in 1851, the Albion Polka was written by Johann Strauss II (or Strauss Junior) and dedicated to Count Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The work takes its title from the old Roman name for Britain. It is not an unfamiliar addition to the Vienna New Year's Concerts. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £67.34Letters from Flanders (Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
This descriptive work by Australian composer Andrew Batterham portrays the experiences of his maternal grandfather, Corporal Reginald Littlejohns, (4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion) in the First World War. Reginald left Melbourne for Europe in May 1916 then served in Flanders through to the end of the war. He returned in April 1919, having sent hundreds of letters home during his service. His honest, articulate, and highly descriptive prose served as inspiration for this piece. Each of the 5 movements portrays a different aspect of Reginald's war, with a quote from his letters included. The first movement was premiered by the Box Hill City Band, conducted by Matt van Emmerik, in Melbourne. Daniel van Bergen conducted Booroondara Brass performing most of the work in April 2019, and Box Hill premiered the complete version in November 2019 conducted by Simon Brown. Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' was written for the inaugural Texas Brass Fest, held at Round Top Festival Institute on 27 May 2023, for the four premier brass bands in Texas - Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio Brass Bands. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church by Charles Wesley, which is also known as 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing', the first verse of which reads: O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! For maximum effect it is suggested that cornets and trombones are staged stood around the band, although if this is not possible then traditional band formation will be acceptable.
