I have arranged this incredibly memorable Big Band piece by Billy Maxted as a feature for the Timps and Kit, inspired by the man who made it famous, that spectacular drummer and showman - ERIC DELANEY -who, at the age of 83, is still performing in the UK and further afield. A book by Eddie Sammons about his astonishing career, including contributions from many famous artists and lots of amusing anecdotes, should be available in 27. The City of Lincoln Band inform me that this was one of their most popular items on their visit to Germany.The Timpani and Drum Kit parts will need good players. To get the best effect, a set of three timps is required, although an optional part for two timps is included. The timps and drums are coordinated, so the parts need to be played as written. For those bands with more than two percussionists, there is a third part, which, although optional, would certainly add to the overall effect. Paint It Black - Mick Jagger & Keith Richards - Len Jenkins
"Paint It Black" (originally released as "Paint It, Black") was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and first released as a single on 6 May 1966. It became the Rolling Stones' sixth number one in the UK and has remained influential as the first number one hit featuring a sitar. The song came at a pivotal period in The Rolling Stones' recording history, a time that saw the song-writing collaboration of Jagger and Richards assert itself as the principal composers of the band's original material. Its lyrics are for the most part meant to describe bleakness and depression and describe the extreme grief suffered by one stunned by the sudden and unexpected loss of wife, lover or partner. It famously plays during the end credits of the film Full Metal Jacket. Beginning in the style of an ironic minuet, which can be by-passed by starting at bar 54 where the heavy rock beat takes over, the piece is interesting and within the capabilities of 3rd or 4th section bands. For those bands with a drummer and one percussionist, an alternative percussion part is provided.

It's Alright - Mike Moran - Len Jenkins
"It's Alright", the theme song for the BBC TV series New Tricks, was written by Mike Moran, whose credits also include composing the song "Barcelona" for Freddy Mercury, the theme to the UK crime series 'Taggart' and the Lynsey de Paul entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. As a producer, he has worked on The Queen Album and Elaine Paige's Piaf. New Tricks follows New Scotland Yard's mythical Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad, which is staffed by retired police officers who have been recruited to look into unsolved crimes, including murders. Whilst this particular squad is fictitious, the concept is based firmly on fact. Although New Tricks does have serious plots, the series also contains a fair amount of humour, usually revolving around in-house banter, and the lyrics to Mike Moran's song does it justice. Dennis Waterman, who played Gerry Standing, one of the team, was the obvious choice of vocalist, although the song was never released commercially. Sadly Dennis died in May 2022.

Beaufort Fanfare, by German composer Friedrich Gattermann, is a dynamic and vibrant musical work inspired by the Beaufort scale, a system for estimating wind speeds. Originally composed for brass ensemble and percussion, it was created to showcase Orchestral Tools' Beaufort Brass sample library, recorded at the iconic AIR Studios in London. Here it has been set for brass band. A central element of Beaufort Fanfare is its exploration of musical density. The piece begins with a single motif and gradually builds in complexity and richness, reflecting the increasing strength of the wind. As it progresses, the music intensifies, with the development of density playing a crucial role in conveying the evolving character of the elements. Through intricate brass harmonies and rhythmic drive, Beaufort Fanfare captures both the awe-inspiring beauty and raw power of nature. More than just an auditory experience, this composition takes the listener on a journey through the elements, celebrating the force of wind in all its forms. Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' Spirit divine, come as of old. So begins the song by Brindley Boon, and that phrase becomes the message of this piece, and an important motif in the music. It appears at the very beginning of the work and recurs at important points during the piece. The theme of the need for spiritual power is further underlined by the use of the hymns Show your power, Wonder-working power and the very old chorus Send a new touch of power on my soul, Lord.The composer first heard Boon's song Spirit Divine when it was sung by Parkhead Songsters in the Sunday morning meeting at his home Corps of Greenock Citadel. They were visiting for the weekend from Glasgow, and were conducted by Songster Leader Walter Chalmers, himself a beautiful lyric tenor soloist. They sang it in a moving fashion, unaccompanied, and such was the impact that, at the conclusion, many people went to the mercy seat. It made a huge impression on the young composer. It was the first time that Downie discovered the enormous power of music in worship. It also serves as a reminder to us all that young people of a tender age are very capable of grasping deeply significant events happening around them. This music was written for the 2020 UK Territorial Youth Band course.

Sir Arthur Bliss (1891 - 1975) was a significant composer and pillar of the British musical establishment. Although Born in London, his father was from the United States and both countries were important in his life and career. A pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music, Bliss travelled to the United States with his father in 1923, taking a prominent part in Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's Pittsfield Music Festival, as well as undertaking some teaching and conducting. In 1925 he married Trudy Hoffman and they returned to the UK early in 1926. Bliss's most influential scores were his ballets and film scores. In 1953 Sir Arthur was appointed Master of the Queen's Music, after which he added a steady stream of fanfares and ceremonial works to his list of works. In 1960 he was commissioned by the American Wind Symphony of Pittsburgh, which requested for festive work to feature on an extensive European tour, including a performance in London.Bliss scored Greetings to a City for antiphonal brass, a choir each of 2 trumpets, 2 horns and three trombones, with tuba and percussion. This adaptation for brass band instruments retains an element of antiphony, emphasing the contrast between the fanfare instruments (cornets and trombones) and the horns and tubas. Greetings to a City is cast in three connected sections, with extended fanfare episodes separated by a short lyrical interlude.- Paul HindmarshDuration: 6.00

Made famous by the boy band 'Take That', this fantastic new angle on the song from Lucy Pankhurst, creatively features the flugel and tenor horn section with full support from the accompanying band.Take That's Gary Barlow wrote 'A Million Love Songs' when he was 15. He also recorded a rough demo of the track, and was one of the songs he gave to music manager Nigel Martin-Smith on a cassette tape as part of his audition to join a boy-band.In his autobiography A Better Me, Gary revealed that Martin-Smith was so impressed by the tape, that he didn't realise it was Gary singing. As legend has it, the conversation went like this:Martin-Smith: "This tape, who has written the songs?"Barlow: "Me"Martin-Smith: "Who wrote the words, then?"Barlow: "Me. And the music and the backing track."Martin-Smith: "Wow, you'd better come back and see me tomorrow."The ballad became one of the group's most popular songs, and is often voted among the greatest love songs of all time. It peaked at No. 7 in the UK charts, and remains a firm favourite, not just for its sentiment, but for the beautiful melody Barlow created.Lucy's arrangement for brass band brings a whole new dynamic to the music and offers the flugelhorn and tenor horns a golden opportunity to shine.

£37.41A Fugal Overture (Brass Band) Gustav Holst arr. Rob Bushnell
A Fugal Overture was written in 1922 by Gustav Holst. It was first performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 14 May 1923 and was used as an opening work to Holst's one-act opera The Perfect Fool. It received its concert premiere on 11 October 1923 at one of Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts. It is an early example of neoclassicism and was influenced by the counterpoint of J. S. Bach, despite its unconventional use of the fugal process. Holst began writing the piece in the summer of 1922, having hoped to develop it into a ballet. It is divided into three sections, the fugal subject with its distinct 3+3+2 pattern, a slower section with solos at the end, and a third section where the subject returns. Although reviews of the piece were mixed at the time of its premiere, the likes of Adrian Boult have said it was "an invigorating work that could effectively start any [...] concert". In more recent years, it has been compared to John Adam's A Short Ride in a Fast Machine. This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass.
