£35.00A Suffolk Prelude - Andrew Duncan
Written for the Ipswich & Norwich Co-Op Band, A Suffolk Prelude is based around five traditional tunes from Suffolk:'Nutting Time','Blackberry Fold','Cupid's Garden','A Seaman's Life''The Bold Richard'The piece begins on the percussion and timpani alone leading through a crescendo into the first statement of the fanfare which is derived from a motif from the tune 'Nutting Time'. This leads into a playing of the 'Nutting Time' tune which is then developed as the tune is passed around the band.'Nutting Time' is a jolly lighthearted tune about a 'fair maid' who meets a handsome young farmer called 'Johnny' when out gathering nuts in the wood. After a pause on the tubular bells the slow tune 'Blackberry Fold' is presented as a solo for Flugel Horn, then as a full band version.'Blackberry Fold' is a touching song about a Suffolk squire who gets married well below his station to a beautiful milkmaid, simply because he loves her! They live happily ever after.The next tune to be heard is the juanty 'Cupid's Garden' played firstly as a solo on the Euphonium, and again this is about the subject of love. This song is sung from a sailors prospective and he tells how he met a lovely maiden and has promised to marry her when he returns from duty at sea.The trombones then play the noble tune 'A Seaman's Life'. This tune seems to serve as a warning to young girls about the fickle nature and the total unsuitability of marrying a sailor! 'Oh a seaman's life is a merry merry life, they'll rob young girls of their heart's delight, they will leave them behind for to sail one morn, but they never know when they'll return'. Despite this it is a fine tune!The last tune featured is 'The Bold Richard' which is played by all the bass instruments in the band. This is a song telling how the Royal Navy friggate 'The Bold Richard' went to battle against a French friggate destroying her and taking her crew as prisoners.Suffolk Prelude goes on to feature a slow version of the tune 'A Seaman's Life' played alongside a fast version of the tune 'Cupid's Garden'. The opening fanfare then returns leading into a final coda section.

Rhapsody - Tim Paton
Composer, Tim Paton comments: Rhapsody began life in 1971, as Rhapsody in three movements. It was originally written for wind and brass octet with timpani, and was performed at the Royal Manchester College of Music (soon to become the RNCM) in 1972.Ten years later, it was expanded into a piece for wind band. In 22, I decided to make another major revision, and create a lower section test piece for brass band. I removed the middle movement, and published it as a "Romance" for brass band. I composed a link between what had initially been the outer movements, and renamed the piece Rhapsody".The link is inspired by the minimalist music of Philip Glass. In the lead up to the grand finale of the Rhapsody, I have used an accompanyingmotif/obligato which is directly inspired by a passage in the final movement of Janacek's "Sinfonietta".

Originally conceived as a ceremonial work for the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, Veni, Sancte Spiritus was written for a Thanksgiving Service at St Clement Danes Church - the Central Church of the RAF in London. This evocative piece was inspired by the church's thousand-year-old architecture and resonant acoustic, creating a soundscape that is both reverent and atmospheric. In adapting the work for brass band, the composer introduces Vaughan Williams's hymn tune Down Ampney, seamlessly woven into the final sections of the piece. This lyrical addition enhances the spiritual tone of the music, aligning perfectly with the hymn text 'Come Down, O Love Divine', and lending the work its new title and emotional depth. Perfect for concert, ceremonial, or liturgical use, Veni, Sancte Spiritus offers a profound and reflective experience for performers and audiences alike. "I was asked by Music for Youth to write a flexibly scored fanfare for the School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and the National Festival in Birmingham in 2013. At its first performance, over 200 young brass players performed "Flanfayre" in Birmingham Town Hall, directed by Roger Argente, members of Superbrass and myself. The score is a progressive romp through some increasingly dance-like grooves, borrowing some of its swing from South America, from marches and big band, moving from a really quite straight opening to a "let-go" moment at the end. It is more like a flan full of different flavours, than a fanfare, hence the title. I set myself a challenge to write 100 bars but ended up with 102, which, after the introduction, can be broken down into 10 easily discernible sections each with their own mini-musical narrative. Feel free to teach the audience the clapping groove and perform only under the strict instruction that you have fun !" - Stephen Deazley. Duration: 4.00. Suitable for 2nd Section Bands and above.

Freaks! was written for Lisa Sarasini in 2006 and first performed by her with Zone One Brass at the Royal College of Music, London. This tuneful and flamboyant showpiece was inspired by the Tod Browning film of the same name. The 1932 black and white cult classic was banned for many years due to its controversial morality issues and lead characters - real life side show 'freaks'. It is one of the most bizarre things to have ever come out of Hollywood. Gavin Higgins' virtuoso trombone solo is programmatic in style, full of humour with a sinister undercurrent, and is broken into seven short scenes: Introduction; Roll up... See the Freaks; The Amazing Cleopatra - Queen of the Air; Gooble Gobble one of us - The Wedding Party; The Fall of Cleopatra; The Freaks Take Revenge; Cleopatra - The Duck Lady. Excursion was the winner of the 2022 BrookWright International Brass Band Composition Competition. The composer Christopher Cook writes: 'In this short and effervescent study for brass band, I wanted to take the listener and players on a journey which moves from a soundworld of bristling, bubbling energy to a triumphant fanfare and finally a moment of repose. The initial fast flurry of notes, highlighted and emphasised by precise elements of percussion, informs the motivic development of the rest of the piece and eventually forms the basis for the textural backdrop to the filmic sounding melody heard around halfway through the piece. The unexpected final passage is intended to be a nod to works for brass band by Paul Patterson and Harrison Birtwistle.' Fanfare of a Nation (2012) was commissioned by the Greater Gwent Youth Brass Ensemble as a short fanfare originally for ten players, and was performed in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh on the occasion of their visit to Wales to mark the Diamond Jubilee last year, under its original title The Royal Diamond Jubilee Fanfare. Since arranged for brass band and performed throughout the UK including by Black Dyke Band in Cardiff, this short work mesmerizes, dazzles and utilizes the fanfare effects so often associated with the brass family. Available to purchase for Brass Band or Brass Ensemble (10 players plus 1 percussion). The brass ensemble version is scored as follows: 4 x Trumpets, 1 x Horn in F, 3 x Tenor Trombones, 1 x Bass Trombone, 1 x Tuba, 1 x Percussion. Trumpet 1 is supplied in both E-flat & B-flat, Horn in F is supplied in E-flat, Tenor Trombone and Tuba parts are supplied in both bass and treble clef.

"Saele Jolekveld" was arranged for Concert Band to Kongelige Norske Marines Musikkorps (The Royal Norwegian Navy Band) and their CD-recording "Julestemning"(2009) featuring Solveig Kringlebotn as soprano soloist and the choir of Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ingar Bergby.The arrangement works very well for a collaborative concert for band and SATB choir and possible soprano soloist. However it will also work well also for concert band alone.

£65.00Four Sketches - Simon Dobson
Simon Dobson wrote his 'Four Sketches' at the request of Peter Bossano, Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten's death. The first movement, 'Fanfare',quotes directly from the opening violin melody from Britten's song cycle Les Illuminations. This melodic line is superimposed upon sonorous Lydian mode chords to project a majestic sound. The second movement, 'Prayer', is adefinite contrast, being and much more reflective and pensive in it's mood, and featuring a dream like euphonium cadenza. The third movement, 'Funeral March', builds from a soft chordal opening to a chaotic andconfusedfortississimo climax with flourishes in the cornets and pounding tri-tones across the basses, before plunging into silence for a flugel cadenza to finish. The final Finale movement is much more positive from the off, withits jaunty melodies over a Brittenesque ostinato. The block chordal passages offer a crashing climax, making for an exciting conclusion to an excellent new work for the medium. Simon Dobson's 'Four Sketches' was the winningentry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition held in Brussels in March 2002.
