I have arranged this incredibly memorable Big Band piece by Billy Maxted as a feature for the Timps and Kit, inspired by the man who made it famous, that spectacular drummer and showman - ERIC DELANEY -who, at the age of 83, is still performing in the UK and further afield. A book by Eddie Sammons about his astonishing career, including contributions from many famous artists and lots of amusing anecdotes, should be available in 27. The City of Lincoln Band inform me that this was one of their most popular items on their visit to Germany.The Timpani and Drum Kit parts will need good players. To get the best effect, a set of three timps is required, although an optional part for two timps is included. The timps and drums are coordinated, so the parts need to be played as written. For those bands with more than two percussionists, there is a third part, which, although optional, would certainly add to the overall effect. Lucy Pankhurst created this impressive work in support of a charitable project, known in 2005 as Brass Band Aid. The organisation called for original compositions to be included in a follow-up CD release - Into Africa to help raise funds for projects in Adet, Africa, and to build awareness of the Make Poverty History campaign.Lucy's creativity and imagination are very prevalent in this work - a complete mix of powerful energy and poignant emotions flow from the score. A strong use of pulsating drums are balanced with sheer tranquility and rich chords. It exudes hope and positivity and perhaps, through its title, offers a gentle warning to listen carefully to the concerns that are aired around us - not least in recognition of the challenges facing the very communities the CD was aiming to help.The work was recorded by the Prairie Brass Band, US and featured on the Brass Band Aid CD - Into Africa.

The 'Kingdom of Dragons' is Gwent in South Wales, known in ancient times as the Kingdom of Gwent, and more recently home to the Newport Gwent Dragons Rugby Union team.This piece was commissioned by the Gwent Music Service with additional funding from Ty Cerdd - Music Centre Wales to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2010 of the formation of the Gwent Youth Brass Band.Although the music is continuous, it is divided into four distinct sections, each one representing one of the unitary authorities which make up the County of Gwent.Monmouthshire, which has a large number of ancient castlesBlaenau Gwent, an historic area of iron and coal miningTorfaen, where Pontypool Park is a notable landmarkNewport, the largest city in the regionThe music begins with a two-bar fanfare, which sets out all the thematic material of the piece. The mood of pageantry that follows describes some of the ancient castles in Monmouthshire, with rolling tenor drums and fanfaring cornets. After a majestic climax the music subsides and quite literally descends into the coal mines of Blaenau Gwent. The percussion provides effects that suggest industrial machinery clanking into life, and the music accelerates to become a perilous white-knuckle ride on the underground railroad. There is a brief respite as a miner's work-song is introduced and, after a protracted build-up, this is restated at fortissimo before the music comes crashing to an inglorious close, much like the UK's mining industry itself. The middle sonorities of the band portray the tranquillity of Pontypool Park, a place of great natural beauty. Brief cadenzas for cornet and euphonium lead to a full band reprise of the pastoral mood. At the end of this section we find ourselves at the top of the park's 'Folly Tower' from which the distant castle turrets of Monmouthshire are visible. Pontypool RFC was one of eleven clubs in the first Welsh league in 1881 and a brief but bruising musical portrayal of the formidable Pontypool front-row, the 'Viet Gwent' leads into the work's final section. This portrays Newport, a symbol for progress and optimism for the future, ideals shared by the Gwent Youth Band itself. The music is a vigorous fugue which advances through various keys and episodes before the final triumphant augmented entry which brings the work to a magnificent conclusion.Duration: 12:00

Commissioned by Margaret Milligan for Ian, her husband who is the musical director of Callendar Brass, based in Callendar near Stirling in Scotland. With Celtic drums and the use of the Scottish traditional song 'An Eriskay Love Lilt' the piece works very well as a lively concert/2nd half opener or even as a piece to liven up the middle of a concert programme. Five movements in techno-pop style. The work begins with Rock March with a few pithy chords over a driving percussion accompaniment. Feeling Free is a slow ballad. Rockarab is devoted to 'the ship of the desert', the camel. Little Chi Yan is a very charming, romantic song for a sweet little girl. In Disco Lights, we hear the stirring sounds of drums and bass guitar while the lights flash in the crowded discotheque. 05:20

A composition with the liberation from the Second World War as its theme. After a solemn introduction one hears the melody of the hymn Abide with you, which was sung a lot during the war. Following there are variations on the theme, finally leading to the magisterial conclusion that represents the ultimate liberation. The work may be interpreted as popular music (with the part for drumset), but a more serious version without drums is possible and, indeed, preferable.Duration: 4:45

Commissioned by YBS Band, this is a kaleidoscopic six movement sequel to Cry of the Celts. The work provides solo opportunities for several principal players. Peter Graham takes us first to Latin America, then to Japan and onwards to Saharan Africa. We get a gentle reprieve via a nostalgic hint of the British Isles before we land in the melting pot of all styles, the USA. In this final section the driving swing section is abruptly stopped and a drum cadenza leads us back into the opening Latin music. The movements are: Amazonia; Rainforest; The Rising Sun; Drums of Thunder; Celtic Dream; Earth Walk. Any of the movements can be programmed individually. Some movements are recorded on QPRL215D Master Brass (Volume Thirteen). All movements are recorded on QPRL123D Windows of the World. Total Duration: 20:30.
