As well as this 'main version', there is also a youth/training band version of the work available which is more accessible to younger bands. This lively new Concert March, "Friends of the Band", was written in recognition of those friends and supporters of all Brass Bands whose help financially and in all other ways, are invaluable in the successful running of the organisations. There is a slight hint of the song, "Dear Old Pals, Jolly Old Pals" in the first section which again embeds the feelings all players and conductors have towards our band's supporters. The work was originally composed for the Hook Norton Brass Band, when the composer's wife gave so much of her time encouraging supporters to become friends. This is a great addition to all bands' libraries and a way to pay tribute and thanks.

Dynasty takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical form first introduced to a contest audience at the Crystal Palace in 1913 by Percy Fletcher in his work Labour and Love.Using key passages from the autobiography of Harry Mortimer, On Brass, as the source for the narrative, the work opens with a four-note leitmotif (Harry's theme, "as if descending from the heavens"), and the timeline unfolds as follows:Harry - One's destiny decided at birth "I'll make him the best cornet player in England"War - Why do the nations so furiously rage together? For a Flower is a very melodic and virtuosic solo work for euphonium and brass band. It opens with a gentle solo introduction on euphonium, which develops into a grand hymnal theme. Following this comes a faster and more virtuosic section in a traditional Irish style, with a varied dialogue between the band and the soloist. The work closes triumphantly with the hymnal theme of the opening. For a Flower showcases both the musical and technical capabilities of this wonderful instrument. The euphonium soloist must naturally master both skills: lyrical playing and virtuoso playing. For a Flower was commissioned by the Dutch euphonium virtuoso Robbert Vosand is dedicated to his wife, Evi.

£104.99The Baltic Way (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain-- was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, 'Struggle for Independence', is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and--in rhythmic terms--contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, 'Tautika giesm ' (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, 'Decades of Suffering', echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This 'Chain of Freedom' is depicted in the final movement of the work. Duration: 10.30

The Gregson Trombone Concerto was originally written in 1979 to a commission from Bedfordshire Education Service, for a new work for Michael Hext, winner of the first BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. This version for brass band was commissioned by Nicholas Childs, Music Director of the Black Dyke Band, specially for Brett Baker, the then principal trombone of the band. He has recorded it on the Doyen label with the Black Dyke Band.The work falls into three main sections, played without a break, but conforming to the traditional pattern of concerto structure. After a slow introduction, containing most of the motivic and rhythmic ideas used in the work, there follows the main fast section which is itself divided into three parts and concludes with a fierce climax (timpani and gong). The slow and rather intense middle section is linked to a cadenza for the soloist, at first unaccompanied but leading to accompanied references to earlier material. The final section is a scherzo which ends dramatically with a re-statement of the opening slow introduction. A brisk coda concludes the work. The interval of a fourth (and its augmented form) provides melodic and harmonic unity for the work, whilst the tonal juxtaposition between E minor and B flat major throughout the concerto is an important element of the structure.The writing for trombone is virtuosic, encompassing the whole range of the instrument, but it also exploits the rather beautiful lyrical sound of which this instrument is capable.
