£33.99The Lord Bless You and Keep You (Brass Band) John Rutter arr. Andrew Wainwright
John Rutter's popular choral benediction is based on Numbers 6:24-26, and has here been arranged for brass band by Andrew Wainwright. It is a setting of a biblical benediction, followed by an extended 'Amen'. Rutter originally scored the piece for four vocal parts (SATB) and organ. He composed it in 1981 for the memorial service of Edward T. Chapman, the director of music at Highgate School, London, with whom he had studied when he attended the school. The arrangement sounds a semi-tone down from the original choral setting although otherwise maintains the same format, so can be performed with choir if they sing down a semi-tone. Saint-Saens' magnificent Finale from Symphony No.3 (widely known as the 'Organ Symphony') has here been arranged for brass band with optional organ by Kevin Norbury. It was recorded by The International Staff Band on its CD Manuscripts, although this version has been revised in places. Saint-Saens decided to add the organ and piano to his 3rd symphony as a pragmatic orchestration innovation. The composition of this symphony was probably started in 1885 and a first draft was completed in Prague in 1886. Saint-Saens later recalled its eventful genesis: 'The Symphony in C was three-quarters sketched out when I found it impossible to write the finale. I did not know how to resolve this situation, until one night I suddenly woke up and, in a sort of hallucination, I heard the whole finale, which I hastily wrote down in outline, knowing that if I went back to sleep without having put anything on paper, I would have forgotten it all the next day.' The symphony was first performed under the composer's direction at Saint James's Hall in London on May 19, 1886. This arrangement by Kevin Norbury can both function as a stand-alone brass band piece, and be performed with an organ by omitting the notes found in square brackets in the parts and score. Andrew Batterham's tour de force Trumpet Concerto showcases the incredible spectrum of emotions the trumpet can convey, in the hands of a dedicated performer. The music ranges from Classical to minimalism, ballads to fanfares, culminating in a wild dance full of stamina and energy. Commissioned by ABC Classic through the ABC Fresh Start Fund, Concerto was premiered by David Elton, Principal Trumpet with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (previously with London Symphony Orchestra). This brass band version was premiered by David and Victoria Brass, conducted by Matt van Emmerik. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto was written in 1953/4 in response to an invitation to compose a work for the Golden Jubilee of the London Symphony Orchestra. Vaughan Williams was by then in his eighty-second year. The lively, outer movements both conclude with extended cadenzas, while the beautifully lyrical Romanza is Vaughan Williams at his best. Phillip Littlemore's brass band arrangement is a welcome addition to the brass band repertoire. Suitable for Championship Section Bands. Duration: 15.00

Music for Greenwich was commissioned in 1980 by the Greenwich Theatre, London, for a new production of Peter Buckman's play 'All Together Now'.In this play, about a down-at-heels brass band in the North of England brought to a new level of self-confidence and achievement by an incoming conductor, the whole cast performed a test piece on stage every night (i.e. Music for Greenwich), in readiness for a competition which they have entered and, of course, win. Although the play is as much a social commentary as anything to do with music-making, every member of the cast had to be able to play a brass instrument to a greater or lesser extent (a difficult challenge for the casting Director!).For obvious reasons, the music is not technically difficult. The work is structured as follows: a brief fanfare-like opening is followed by an allegro section, rhythmic and playful; a slow lyrical section is then introduced (a suitably nostalgic melody featuring solos for cornet and trombone), before a return to the fast music, a hint of the fanfare, and finally a climactic flourish to round things off. This is music to be enjoyed, as hopefully it was every night by the audience and actors alike.Duration: 5.00
