New London Pictures (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Hess, Nigel - Littlemore, Phillip

New London Pictures represents elements of London in the 21st Century. The Millennium Bridge describes the pedestrian's journey across this wonderful new landmark bridge over the Thames, starting at the imposing Tate Modern, crossing the busy river, and onwards to St. Paul's Cathedral with its bells ringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incredibly large ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a 'flight' on this riverside wheel, at the top of which the panoramic view of London is breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitable depiction of the view. As with all modern cities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge, and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Here are Londoners attempting to go about their business in the face of overwhelming odds..... Suitable for Premier Youth/2nd Section Bands and above. Duration: 15.00

    Resurgence - Sam Fisher

Resurgence is a new thrilling work which was composed as the finale for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band’s "Great Fire of London" programme which they performed at ‘Brass In Concert’ 2016. Written in three sections, the work graphically depicts London in its post-fire state, with damaged bells and the ghostly atmospheric sounds. The opening movement entitled, ‘Devastation’ leads to the rebuild of London town, with "Oranges and Lemons" being heard in short fanfares, eventually arriving at ‘New London’ which features the iconic "London's Burning" and familiar Westminster Chimes. This is a great showcase for any band looking to impress on both the concert and contest stage.

    Hellfire - Ben Hollings

Hellfire was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band's programme of music at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead; a programme which told the story of the Great Fire of London 350 years ago. Hellfire depicts part of the story where the fire broke out on Pudding Lane and spread throughout London, causing havoc and leading people to flee from the city for their safety. The piece opens with night falling upon the city on the evening of September 2nd, 1666. Swirling sounds and distant rumblings are heard throughout the band as easterly winds blow strongly through the city. Suddenly a single spark is blown out of the baker's oven and ignites the great fire. The fire quickly spreads, alarm bells are raised, and panic ensues as people scream and run for their lives from the menacing fire. The strong wind carries the dancing fire across rooftops from house to house and the sound of collapsing structures thunders with the roaring flames. People look in awe and horror at the mighty fire surrounding them, whilst they stand in the ‘eye of the storm'. Gunpowder-fuelled explosions boom and the escape from the city continues. People piling their precious belongings onto boats and sailing down the River Thames to escape. A feeling of hope is cast upon London as the fire finally begins to subside, and 4 days later... darkness finally falls upon the city once more.

North of England Folk Song Suite | trad. arr. Alwyn Green

An excellent concert piece of three traditional but contrasting songs, a love poem, a song of longing and loss, and a quick jaunty celebration of traditional life. The Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill from Yorkshire is a love ballad. The lass is Frances l'Anson, whose parents disapproved of her chosen love, and the couple eloped. The piece popularised the poetic phrase - A Rose without a Thorn. The Oak and the Ash from Lancashire is a traditional song comparing town and country life - a very popular theme in the 17th century. A girl from the North of England has moved to London to find a husband, but she is lonely in the city and wishes she could be home again - 'O the Oak and the Ash and the bonny Elum tree, they're all growing green in the North Country'The Keel Row from Northumberland is a traditional folk song evoking the life and work of the Keelmen of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and with it's quick light beat it is used as the trot march for the Life Guards and the Royal Horse Artillery.InstrumentationSoprano, Solo, Repiano, 2nd and 3rd CornetsFlugelhornSolo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns1st and 2nd Baritone1st, 2nd and Bass TromboneEuphoniumEb and Bb BassesPercussion parts (2):1: Timpani, Glockenspiel, Cymbal, Sleigh Bells, Maracas2: Drum Kit, Gong, Side DrumISMN: 979-0-708127-02-4

Seize the Day - Peter Graham

Seize the Daywas written for the London-based International Staff Band of The Salvation Army, conductor Dr Stephen Cobb, the title serving as the theme for the band's USA West Tour 2010. As befits music being performed during a trip to the United States the work is based upon three traditional American spirituals. The first, The Gospel Train, is introduced following a carillon-like intrada in trombones and bells with supporting cornet flourishes. Ostinati drive the musical locomotive along until an abrupt halt ushers in another kind of vehicle, the celestial Sweet Chariot, featuring euphonium and trombone soloists. The finale, Amen, celebrates the arrival at our destination with some tongue-in-cheek West Coast (and Swinging London!) references before a reprise of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot brings the music to a majestic and joyful conclusion.

Dances and Arias - Edward Gregson

This work was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes Band Festivals (with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain) for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 7th October 1984.Dances and Arias is in one continuous movement, but as the title suggests is a series of alternating fast and slow sections as follows: Dance – Aria I – Dance (scherzo) – Aria II – Dance. The opening dance is energetic and introduces a four-note motif (on trombones) which is the basis for much of the melodic material in the work. Throughout, there is a continuous process of thematic cross-reference and transformation. The first aria unfolds a long melody on solo cornet, eventually continued by all the solo cornets, and dissolving into a shimmering harmonic background (muted cornets, horns and baritones) over which is heard a brief self-quotation on solo tuba. This leads into the second dance, a frenetic scherzo, followed by the second aria, in the style of a lament (solo euphonium, followed by two flugel horns). This builds to a powerful climax which subsides, leaving the percussion to introduce the final toccata-like dance. It transforms material from the opening before a coda brings the music to a triumphant close. The large percussion section is an integral part in the work and uses a wide variety of instruments including timpani, glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, tubular bells, tom-toms, snare drum, bongos and tam-tam.
