At last here we have an interesting and quite playable solo concert for the tuba, a too often undervalued wind instrument. This concerto was written for and dedicated to the Portuguese tuba player Adelio Carneiro. Composer Carlos Marques who wrote already some successful pieces for Molenaar Edition such as 'Cassiopeia' and 'Transit of Venus' warrants an accessible and excellent wind band orchestration.

Commissioned by the Scottish Brass Band Association for the 2004 European Brass Band Championships in Glasgow. This music is a set of variations on the tune known as St Magnus, which is attributed to Jeremiah Clarke. Most people will associate it with Thomas Kelly's hymn which begins: "The Head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now". The tune is very simple, consisting of just two, four-bar phrases. Neither is there much in the way of rhythmic variety, every note being a crotchet with the exception of two quavers, and the last note in each phrase. Within such a simple structure, however, lies considerable strength.

This work was commissioned by the London Borough of Redbridge with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain, and was first performed at the London Festival of 1972 by the Redbridge Youth Band, conducted by John Ridgeon.Intrada is in three sections, the first and last being similar. The middle section unfolds an expansive chromatic melody, heard initially on the horns, but later in canon between cornets and trombones. Back in the day I always enjoyed playing the well-known trombone works by Alexandre Guilmant and Ferdinand David and I wanted to return to that type of language and writing in a short concert piece. The music is direct in its expression, mostly exciting but sometimes lyrical. The pace of this etude is relentless and requires some deft double tonguing although I stayed away from too many running semiquavers.
