Frenchman Jules Verne was a pioneer in science fiction during the late 19th Century, penning some classic stories such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Around the World in 80 Days - both of which have already been the subject of brass band test-pieces. It was therefore natural for me to choose Verne's 1869 watery magnum opus as the subject for this piece to which there are five sections, as well as an introduction and a finale.THE NAUTILUS. After a mysterious introduction we are introduced to The Nautilus - a fantastical submarine.THE CORAL KINGDOM. We visit awe-inspiring underwater coral formations.SQUID ATTACK. The Nautilus is attacked by a school of giant squid, or 'devilfish'.CAPTAIN NEMO. Captain Nemo is a loner and an eccentric. Some say he is a madman. Soloists of the band help to uncover the character of this enigmatic but powerful figure.MAELSTROM. The Nautilus is dragged into the ocean's deadliest whirlpool but Captain Nemo lives to fight another day.Duration: 12.30

With the world reaching crisis, we open with a reminder that the world has suffered in recent years from some of the most raging destruction of our plants and animal life, from wildfires. With the time left becoming smaller and smaller with each day passing, the piece reminds us next of the 'Tolling Bell of Extinction' before the conclusion takes us to a place all too familiar - the present - where with action and with a 'Call for Change', we can hopefully make a difference to our future, our children's future, and save our planet from devastation, from decimation, from extinction! Across the Ocean (Bra) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich
After "The Poseidon" and "A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle", "Across The Ocean" is the third composition that inspired Pimpanit by her favorite sea painting of Romain Steppe, a Belgian painter who lived in the 19th century (1859-1927). It depicts 3 different images of the sea connected to the emotion of sailors. The first part gives the mixed feelings between agitation and excitement reflecting the turbulent sea which is challenging for the sailors to discover the new land. The second part reflects the beautiful calm sea when the sun sets. That gives warm and romantic feelings but hidden with loneliness especially for the sailors who travel far away from home and miss their loved one. Then the image suddenly changes to the angry sea with rain and storm in the third part. To end the first part's theme comes back declaring that the adventure starts again!

Recommended - Championship & 1st Section One Small Step is a programmatic piece describing the launch, the journey to the moon and the successful landing on the Moon's surface by the crew of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Commissioned by The Flowers Band, helping to lead them to their 'Most Entertaining Band' award-winning performance at the 2013 Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band contest, the piece also won the 'Best New Composition' award at the 2013 West Lothian Festival of Brass with its performance by The Co-operative Funeralcare Band. It is an ideal concert feature for entertainment contests opening up opportunities to incorporate multi-media snippets of the associated Presidential speeches and video footage of the historic moments that the piece depicts. A Road Less Travelled By(Philip Sparke)Anglo Music | 16 minutesA Road Less Travelled Bywas commissioned byPalangos Orkestrasfor the Championship Section of the 2020 European Brass Band Championships held in Palanga, Lithuania.The composer writes:The title alludes to a poem by American author, Robert Frost, which appeared in his 1916 collection,Mountain Intervals. In common with most of my larger works, the piece is not programmatic, but purely abstract; there is no extra-musical story. The choice of title chimes with my view of how composers can often develop. There can be no 'destination' in a composer's career, but rather a continuing journey to an unknown place. From piece to piece a composer needs to decide his or her next steps, never really knowing where they might lead. As Frost so eloquently describes, these sorts of instinctive decisions guide all our lives.

The Poseidon (Bra) - Pimpanit Karoonyavanich
In Greek mythology "Poseidon" is the god who reigns over the sea, the waters and their gods. The opening of this work reflects the power of Poseidon. He could turn a calm sea into a rough and turbulent sea that swallows up ships. With his famous trident he can generate an earthquake, hence his nickname "Earth Shaker". Every living being is afraid of him, including his wife and children. Deep inside, however, he feels lonely. The middle part of this work shows the other side of Poseidon as a normal person who desires for love and understanding. However, this sad but sweet theme doesn't last long because its angry character resurfaces. He starts again to use his power in an aggressive way and the powerful opening theme is repeated. After "A Journey to The Bermuda Triangle", this is the second work in which the composer has drawn her inspiration from her favourite seascape painting by the Belgian painter Romain Steppe (1859-1927).
