The Yiddish word 'Klezmer' has been derived from the Old Hebrew words 'Kley' (tool, instrument) and 'Zemer' (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. 'Klezmer Discovery' is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe.The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L'cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel's Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, 'Der Terk in Amerika', a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of 'Klezmer Discovery' (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

Rob Goorhuis wrote this challenging work for solo euphonium with its marvellous title The Seven Divine Properties at the request of Danny Oosterman and after an idea of Anteun Hoesen. In fact, this piece came about because the Andels Fanfare Corps was going to record a CD in early 2012 exclusively with pieces by Rob Goorhuis. Anteun Hoesen plays the solo part in this piece on the CD.The concept of divine properties features heavily in various ancient religions: these are properties to which man can aspire--through striving towards divine properties one can evolve spiritually and become a better person. Different divine properties feature in various religions. Inthe Christian church, the terms Faith, Hope and Love play an important role.This composition is primarily written from an Old Testament point of view. The chosen qualities are as follows: Simplicity, Strength, Truth, Perseverance and Passion. After a short introduction of the thematic material, the various properties are depicted in musical miniatures.

This arrangement of "Abide with me" slightly differs from the traditional representation of the hymn. The piece has a majestic introduction based on elements from and around the hymn. Furthermore, the theme is presented in a more familiar way, first in low brass and then tutti. The ending then reverts to the expression from the opening. This arrangement may fit in many concert programs, but is perhaps ideally suited for church concerts.

When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for Wind Band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available to Wind Band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of Bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable Tenor Horn player, Sheona White. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The band takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. A Cornet then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close. A fantastic new addition to the solo repertoire for this much neglectedsolo instrument.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer's series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso.After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tuttiversion of the main theme which is followed by the traditional 'bass' strain. A change of key heralds the trio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.

Symphonic Contrasts is an original composition in three harmoniously connected movements. The fi rst movement opens with a brilliant introduction and presents two themes that are developed simultaneously and become intermingled. The second movement is at a slower tempo and gives several soloists the opportunity to showcase their expressive skills. The last movement begins with a musical dialogue between timpani, bongos and cymbals. Symphonic Contrasts has been selected as the set piece (2nd section - Brass Band) for the 2010 Lucerne Cantonal Band Music Festival Competition in Willisau (Switzerland).
