A Tear in the Fabric of Time - Gareth Wood

A Tear in the Fabric of Time is essentially a symphony for brass band and was inspired by the book The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, which attempts to simplify complex ideas in modern physics for the layperson. This piece was dedicated to and written for the Buy As You View Band but was first performed by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, conducted by Robert Childs in Summer 2006. The work is featured by the Cory Band on their recording The Promised Land (DOYCD218).A brassy, fanfare like introduction provides much of the material for the rest of the work. This leads into a dramatic 'Allegro' driving forward with brittle motives and stabbing chords. A euphonium melody accompanied by divided basses attempts to mellow the mood, but is unsuccessful as the music drives ruthlessly on! The centre of the work is a choral like Adagio; maybe the blackness of space or the darkness of human nature. A short episode leads into a 'Presto' which is a reworking of the first 'Allegro' relentlessly careering to a violent end![Gareth Wood, 2006]

A Summer Holiday - Patrick Millstone

In 'A Summer Holiday' Patrick Millstone takes us with him on a journey. After a year's hard work we may finally enjoy a well-earned holiday. The first part of this three-part composition has the appropriate title 'On Tour'. When we chose our holiday destination, the brochure said that it would be bathed in sunlight every day. Unfortunately, this turns out not to be the case. Somewhat melancholically, we play round games in our summer house on a 'Rainy Day'. However, the next day, when the sun again has driven away all the clouds, we naturally visit the 'Crowded Beach', where we enjoy both sun, sea and beach once again.

Summer Waltz (Training Band) - Andrew Stevenson

Summer Waltz was written in 2010 for the newly formed Thurcroft Training Band. The piece was essentially written to expand the range of repertoire for the band. There is a recurring melody for the players to latch onto and a strong waltz feel throughout. I have tried to incorporate lots of different techniques and articulations into 'Summer Waltz' to give the players opportunities to practice basic techniques within a band situation. Even though it is quite challenging, the piece is manageable by beginners.Thurcroft Training Band recorded 'Summer Waltz' to go on Thurcroft Welfare Band's CD 'Best of British' which is available off their website: http://www.thurcroftwelfareband.co.uk

Summer Storm - Antonio Vivaldi - Rodney Newton

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice and began his adult life in the church, becoming known as the 'Red Priest', presumably due to his sandy-coloured hair. Health problems prevented him continuing actively in the priesthood and he turned his attention to music. He wrote 18 operas, many sacred choral works and over 300 concerti, many for use at the Ospidale della Piet orphanage where he was director of music. Of these, the 12 violin concerti known as The Four Seasons (from the opus 8 set, The Trial of Harmony and Invention), have become the best known. The third concerto, Summer, includes a graphic description of a thunderstorm which makes an effective showpiece when played by any solo instrument. Sadly, Vivaldi died in poverty in Vienna, whilst trying vainly to secure commissions for himself, but his music has survived to become some of the best loved in the world.
