£38.00Icebreaker (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Harrold, Tom
Icebreaker was originally written for Superbrass in March 2012 and recorded in it's original brass dectet and percussion form on their "Brass Taps" CD. The work begins with tumultuous fanfare, shrouded by thick chords in the lower brass. This fanfare-like material leads to a biting statement from the trombones. An 'icy' gritty section, once again played by the trombones grows in energy, punctuated by the return of the fanfares. The horns, providing a little respite, emerge in a quiet restrained line, which is coloured by the rest of the ensemble. Before fully coming to fruition, the horn line is quickly cut-short and subsumed by the sudden return of the energetic material from the other instruments, which grows to the end of the piece. Duration: 4.30. Suitable for Championship Section Bands.

In this beautiful composition, melodic fragments of the hymn tune Beecher are morphed into a series of variations, showing the melody in various moods from expressive, then quiet and soft, to bright and triumphant in the end. Written as a test piece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. An atmospheric and descriptive work, Sea Pictures is in three sections. The quiet but very difficult opening describes the sea at dawn when all is still save for the cries of the early-morning gulls and deep movements of the sea itself. The sun rises and the next section pictures it glistening and sparkling on the waves. A school of playful dolphins passes. As they swim into the distance we are alone again with the sun and the waves. But there are distant rumblings; from far away a storm approaches. Cool breezes disturb the surface of the sea as it clouds over. And then the storm is upon us, turning the sea into the most awful force in all nature. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, it abates, leaving the sea once again serene in sunlight. All is calm but, as the work fades to a close, distant claps of thunder remind us that we are always at the mercy of the power and ficklesness of nature. Championship section. Duration 20:13

Seascapes was commissioned for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in 1988.Seascapes takes its inspiration from the poem 'Cargos' by John Masefield. In the first movement, a gentle lyric theme, set against a pulsating background is contrasted with a dance. The dance reaches its climax and the music concludes with a quiet theme. The second movement has something of the nature of a sarabande, with a central section, which is a little lighter but retains a Spanish flavour. The composer adds a whimsical thought of his own that there may also have been a party of monks aboard. A variety of ingredients blend in the third movement: the coaster engines, the sea, some jovial shanty-music and the storm element through which the coaster steadily chugs.Suitable for Championship Section bands.
