Partita was written in 1989 to a commission from Eikanger/Bjrsvik Musikklag (Norway) who were European Champions at the time.There are three movements.1 The first movement is almost a miniature concerto for band. It opens with a relentless quaver passage in the basses, which builds until the whole band is involved. Horns and baritones are first to take centre-stage in close harmony and the euphoniums and basses follow them. These forces combine to introduce the cornets that have a 10-part fanfare to themselves before the trombones interrupt. The opening quaver figure returns, somewhat ominously, and, after the full band recalls previous material, brings the movement to a close.2. Starts with a cornet solo over a pulsating accompaniment after which the band builds to a noble tune on the trombones. The full band takes over and brings back the opening cornet tune with which the soloist, with the aid of a euphonium counter-melody, quietly ends the movement, leading directly into:3. A sparkling vivo, which opens with the fanfare-like figures throughout the band until a solo cornet, emerges with an acrobatic tune. The whole band takes this up until horns; baritones and trombones introduce an energetic second subject, which leads to a full band climax in the form of a jubilant chorale. This died away to reintroduce the opening fanfare against a new theme from the trombones, which eventually leads back to a recapitulation. We are then thrown headlong into a 12/8 presto, which hurtles to a coda, which recalls the opening themes.

£33.83O Little Town (St Louis) (Brass Band) Redner arr. Fendall Hill
This arrangement of O Little Town of Bethlehem is based on the beloved carol text by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), set to the familiar St. Louis tune composed by Lewis Redner in 1868. Originally written for a Christmas Sunday school service, the melody famously came to Redner in a dream the night before it was needed - an origin story that mirrors the spontaneous inspiration behind this brass band setting. Fendall Hill's arrangement was prepared for Sovereign Brass (Wednesbury, England) and included in their 2023 Christmas CD. Lyrical and reverent, this version captures the timeless beauty of the carol while offering a fresh voice for modern brass ensembles. This piece was arranged by Halyna Ovcharenko, a Ukrainian composer who was born in Lugansk, a Ukrainian city that is currently under occupation by the Russian Federation. All the proceeds from this sale will go towards the 'A family for every orphan' appeal, which is providing emergency relief services to thousands of children and families in Ukraine. For more information about the charity please visit https://afamilyforeveryorphan.org/ukraine/ Halyna Ovcharenko has been composing music since she was 11. Many of her compositions of various genres have received international awards, but she discovered the world of brass band music with its specific timbre and huge range of musical colors only recently, in 2022, while composing her Vyshyvanka for Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Halyna comments: "I enjoyed my experience. Since then I have had an appetite to write more for brass bands, and here we are - an arrangement of a traditional English Christmas song which I have done especially to raise money for Ukrainian orphans. Their heroic parents stood for my Lugansk, for our Ukraine and for the whole World. I hope that the World will make these children feel that they are not left alone, giving them love, care and joy." Bristling with energy and vitality, this is a terrific arrangement of the fourth and final movement from Piano Sonata No. 2, which is Sergei Prokofiev's celebrated piano solo piece composed in 1912. The arranger writes: 'Whilst I have endeavoured to maintain the characteristics and flavours of the original piece, I altered and added dynamics and musical notations in a few cases where they seemed to fit the medium of the brass band and to reflect a general performance manner of this piece on a piano. I also added percussion parts which provide additional colour. VIEW SCORE PDF This uplifting and rhythmic fanfare by American composer J. Aaron Stanley will be an ideal alternative to the traditional fare that is written in celebration of the Olympic Games. The composer writes: 'Most of my works start with a concept and working title in mind before I even begin composing. But Fanfare for the Olympians, on the other hand, was titled afterward, allowing the music to suggest its own title. The festive, anticipatory nature of the work seems to build excitement and tension for something celebratory and grandiose, like the Olympic Games. Written in 2000, at the time, I was obsessed with quartal harmonies and asymmetrical meters. But the driving eighth-note pulse of alternating 2+2+3 / 3+2+2 is what drives the fanfare forward to its epic climax.' The Alchymist's Journal - Kenneth Hesketh
The Alchymist's Journal (Variants for Brass Band) was commissioned by Faber Music Band Consultant Paul Hindmarsh in 2001, with the support of the Brass Band Heritage Trust, as a substantial concert/contest challenge that would be within the compass of the country's most able youth and first section bands. It received its first performance in January 2002, by Black Dyke Band under Nicholas Childs, as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass.Since its original publication, composer Kenneth Hesketh has made a number of revisions to the work. Most of these were included in the recording made by Foden's Band (Bramwell Tovey) for NMC Recordings (NMC D142). This definitive new edition, including all the composer's revisions, has been specially prepared for the 2015 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and is the text that all bands performing will be required to use.Brass Band Grade 5: 1st SectionDuration: 12 minutes.
