Fanfare & Funk - Sam Fisher

This original work for brass band is the perfect choice to open a concert of contest programme. At just over three minutes, the music is in two clear sections, depicting the contrasting styles of traditional fanfare and modern funk. After a flourishing fanfare opening, the Cornets and Trombones lead a verse of the opening motif, accompanied by a rhythmically diminished version of the same motif from the Euphoniums and Baritones. This ostinato then leads us into a great entertaining funk section, with each section of the band rising to their feet as the piece builds to an exciting finale that is sure to engage audiences of all ages!

Arctic Funk - In Arctic Funk you might get a feeling of a party that takes place between ice-rocks and snow-capped mountains. More information - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Arctic Funk might just as well have been a flashing sequel to a scene from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Popular music but with a difference, as indicated by the title. The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. The Composer: In Arctic Funk you might get a feeling of a party that takes place between ice-rocks and snow-capped mountains.

Uptown Funk! - Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars - Dave Collins

Brass Bands are amongst the most versatile of instrumental ensembles. With that, comes this showcase of a piece that held its place at No.1 in the charts for 14 consecutive weeks and was nominated for 2 Grammy Awards. Following some legal matters that needed clearing up concerning the writing credits on the original single, bands have been unable to purchase this title, until now! Full of energy and life, this really is the piece for your next concert programme if you want to grab your audience’s attention and be a real hit with the younger generation.

    Funk Engine - Ryan Howells

Funk Engine was commissioned for the Intermediate Section of the 2016 National Youth Brass Band Championships. When I was commissioned to write a piece for the championships I decided that I wanted to create something a bit different to standard brass band repertoire. I decided that the best way to do this was to go a bit out of my comfort zone and explore some styles of music that I have yet to experiment with.I have always been a great lover of Jazz, Funk and Big Band music and the sounds associated with them. In Funk Engine I have tried to capture some of these sounds, however, I am a brass-bander at heart and as such I’ve tried to create a fusion of styles that hopefully combines the best of brass band and jazz into one piece.

The driving rhythms and lush harmonies of funk music is a perfect vehicle for the tight, dynamic playing of a solid brass band. The brass sections of Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire inspired players from the 1980s onwards and being part of this type of rhythmic force is a great experience. This piece is designed to be rewarding for all the performers and of course the most important group; the audience.Duration: 4:00 minutesPercussion: 2 Players playing drum kit, bongos and cowbell Grade 4: Moderately Difficult 1st Section Bands
