£33.25Bagatelle No.25 in A Minor - Fur Elise (Brass Band) Beethoven arr. Olaf Ritman
Perhaps the most well-known piano piece by Ludwig van Beethoven, Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor (written around 1810) is better known under its subtitle 'Fur Elise'. Even to this day it is still unknown who Elise was, with at least four theories claiming to tell the story. It might have been one of Beethoven's students or Therese Malfatti, a young lady who got much attention from him. The theory is that Beethoven's autograph Ludwig Nohl could not decipher his handwriting and might have read Elise instead of Therese. Nevertheless the piece has become extremely popular over the last two centuries and is often the very first real classical piece a beginner pianist goes to. Many classical pieces have been transcribed in contemporary fashion for brass bands in recent times, with Toccata in D Minor by J.S. Bach arranged by Ray Farr being the most popular and more recently Vivaldi's first part of Winter from The Four Seasons arranged by Philip Harper. This arrangement of Fur Elise fits in this series perfectly and seeks to bring a smile to its listeners. The last two bars are a direct tribute to Ray Farr's aforementioned arrangement of Toccata. £33.25Menuet (Brass Band) Ravel arr. Rob Bushnell
Le Tombeau de Couperin (The Grave of Couperin) was written by Maurice Ravel between 1914 and 1917, originally a suite of piece for solo piano. Based on what was considered a traditional Baroque suite, Ravel wanted to pay homage to Baroque French keyboard music, whilst retaining his 20th-century chromaticism, making the work neoclassicist. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who died fighting in World War I. Ravel produced an orchestral version in 1919, omitting two of the original six movements. The Menuet was written in memory of Jean Dreyfus; Ravel had recuperated at his home. This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £33.25Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Brass Band) Rachmaninoff arr. Rob Bushnell
One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions, Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3, No. 2) is part of a set of five pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie. It was written when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old and was first performance by the composer on 26 September 1892 at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been transposed from the original (for piano) of C-sharp minor to A minor, which better suits a brass band. There is another arrangement of this piece by Sandy Smith (published by Obrasso) which is designed for more advanced ensembles. £44.95Judd: Lyric Variations
This solo was written at the request of Stephen Cobb and was premiered by Derick Kane with The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army in 1999. It subsequently became the title track of the solo CD recorded by the same forces. The theme, commonly known as 'Lord of the Dance', is followed by four variations (waltz, soft shoe, brillante, lento) and a blistering finale! A piano accompaniment version is included in The Derick Kane Euphonium Album.
