2012 National Championships Finals - First Section.Commissioned for the 2012 Section 1 Finals as a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the work is in three contrasting continuous sections that run continuously and the music is derived from Parry's coronation anthem, I Was Glad. The sections are:In Memorium, evoking the noble but gentle personality of the Queen's father, George VI. Opening with an atmospheric baritone solo (and later featuring solo horn, flugel horn, euphonium and solo cornet), the music explores themes of grief, sentimentality and hope.Coronation, a fanfare and subsequent theme which is grandiose in style, capturing the spirit and excitement of British pomp and ceremony.The closing, Jubilate is a celebration of life and family values, Vivat being Latin for life, or long life. The music passes through moments of tension, virtuosity, humour and jubilance before a finale constructed from connected musical fragments, drawn from throughout the work, form (for the first time) Parry's majestic I Was Glad theme.Duration: 10.45

The first presentation of the theme can be used for the purpose of accompanying congregational singing. At Section A the second presentation of the tune appears in the key of the dominant, the melody being given throughout to Solo Horn, with First Horn, First Trombone, Soprano and Flugel reinforcing the melody in the various phrases. Incidentally, see that the players do not break these phrases; it should be possible to take the four bars in one breath quite easily. Take due care of the light and shade which should be delicately applied. In the last bar the music gathers strength as we pass back into the original key for the last verse; pay particular attention to the part allotted to Second Baritone and Euphonium which needs to be slightly stressed. For the last appearance of the tune at Section B the full Band is used, apart from the third phrase which is given solo by Solo Comet with a light accompaniment above a bass pedal. Notice the rit. operating from the end of the eleventh bar and also the short swell effect on the fourth beat of the fourteenth bar.

This light-hearted soprano cornet feature offers a fresh and entertaining take on the well-known Christmas carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Thought to date back to 16th-century England, the carol reflects a tradition of festive singing outside the homes of the well-to-do - often accompanied by requests for treats such as figgy pudding, a forerunner of today's Christmas pudding. Kenneth Downie's arrangement embraces the jovial spirit of the original, pairing nimble soprano cornet writing with bright, colourful scoring for brass band. The famous refrain, 'And we won't go until we've got some', sets the tone: cheerful, a touch cheeky, and full of seasonal good humour. This engaging major Christmas work features three carols or songs associated with the place of Christ's birth: Once In Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem (Forest Green) and How Far Is It To Bethlehem? During Old Testament times, the city of Jerusalem had been considered the 'City of David', as the political and spiritual capital of Israel. However, after Christ's birth, that name was given to the town of Bethlehem - a quiet farming village in the countryside. This new designation is first mentioned in the Gospel of Luke: ''For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.' (Luke 2:11) A variety of moods are used to express:- The crowds of people arriving in Bethlehem to be taxed, overtaking the town, leaving no room for a young, pregnant Mary and her husband.- The stillness of the countryside on the eve of Christ's birth.- The excitement of worshippers celebrating the birth of a Saviour.
