2012 British Open and the Netherlands Brass Band Championships. Championship Section Test Piece. Electra is loosely based on the play by Sophocles. The 'Elektra Chord' provides the signature chord and motivic elaboration used by composer Richard Strauss to represent the eponymous character of his opera Elektra. There are three clear sections to the work. The first is subtitled 'Lust for Revenge' which is a highly charged element with an ensemble approach to the writing; the second is the lyrically inspired 'Laments' where all the key solos occur and the musical language exploits the more poetic properties of the chord, and the final section, 'Dance to Death' which represents a return to rhythm as the main driving force.

Concertante Variations on an original theme after Pyotr Ilyich TchaikovskyJan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. Dark Arteries was commissioned by Rambert Dance Company and first performed in May 2015 with the Tredegar Town Band sharing the stage with Rambert dancers. Dark Arteries is a personal and at times highly wrought response to the Miners Strike and its aftermath. It is in three movements, the first and last are expansive, with widely contrasting sound worlds, from dark, brooding melodies and the haunting sounds of solo flugel horn to wild syncopations on cornets, suggestive of an imposing, but often bleak mining landscape. Lyric Variations (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Steadman-Allen, Ray
