This piece was commissioned by a brass band from the Jura in Switzerland to thank its resigning conductor for his loyalty and work. The first and last sections of this composition develop a joyful and highly energetic theme which expresses the complete commitment required of a conductor in order to get the best out of the musicians. The central passage mirrors an atmosphere full of nostalgia. After so many years of intense and relentless work, it is always difficult for a keen conductor to retire. 06:15

Leonesse is the name of the castle and landed estates of Lady Guinevere, from the famous story of King Arthur. This stately concert march leads us to the old England with its legendary castles and the beautiful and impressive landscapes where many knights have died. Following a festive opening, a majestic melody symbolises the atmosphere of courtly elegance and refinement. The title Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) can he interpreted on a number of levels. Musically it has a rather mystical feel to it,?and the single note with which the piece begins continues uninterrupted throughout, like an inextinguishable flame, or?a constant source of hope. There are lyrical and song like solo lines for cornet, flugel and euphonium. This composition was performed as part of the Cory Band's winning Brass in Concert programme in 2012.

Elgar wrote his Enigma Variations between 1898 and 1899. It is without a doubt Elgar's best-known large scale composition, and is dedicated to 'my friends within', as each variation is an affectionate portrayal of one of his circle of close acquaintances. The ninth variation, Nimrod, is dedicated to Augustus J. Jaeger, Elgar's publisher at Novello & Co. and also his editor and close friend. The name of the variation refers to 'the mighty hunter before the Lord' and can be found in the Book of Genesis. The name J?ger is German for hunter. Often used for solemn occasions, it is the most poignant and beautiful pieces of British music. Duration: 4:00
