This foot-tapping Latin-style cornet feature showcasing the front row was written by Barrie Gott for the Brisbane Excelsior Band. The composer writes: 'I had wanted to write something in this genre after the success of the third movement of the Jazz Suite. Entertainment numbers are always needed for park and popular concerts. It is important that the rhythm section maintains a consistent tempo. They can be featured also. The samba rhythm and feel should be maintained throughout. This unique arrangement by Fendall Hill of Away in a Manger brings together two beloved melodies of the cherished Christmas carol, seamlessly intertwining the popular American setting known as "Mueller" with the gentle strains of "Cradle Song", the tune favoured across Britain, Ireland, and the British Commonwealth. First introduced to American audiences by James R. Murray in Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses (1887), the Mueller melody - often mistakenly attributed to Martin Luther - has become the most recognised version of the carol in the United States. Complementing this is the lyrical Cradle Song, composed by William J. Kirkpatrick and published in Around the World with Christmas (1895), offering a tender counterpoint to Murray's setting. VIEW SCORE PDF This arrangement of the popular carol Ding Dong Merrily on High is the first published work by BrookWright Music of English arranger Stephen Tighe. This accessible setting receives a fresh, rhythmic treatment, aided by the use of sleigh bells and tubular bells. The tune itself first appeared as a secular dance tune known under the title Branle de l'Official in Orchesographie, a dance book written by the French cleric, composer and writer Jehan Tabourot (1519-1593). The carol was first published in 1924 in his The Cambridge Carol-Book: Being Fifty-two Songs for Christmas, Easter, and Other Seasons. Woodward took an interest in church bell ringing, which no doubt aided him in writing it. The macaronic style is characteristic of Woodward's delight in archaic poetry. A slow, bluesy solo for trombone with band accompaniment. Composer Rob Wiffin wrote this piece after sorting through old paperwork during the Covid lockdown of Spring 2020, rediscovering songs from years earlier that had been written with just melody and chord symbols. 'Do you Recall?' developed from one such song into a trombone solo, and has since proved popular with trombonists, having already been recorded by Brett Baker. It is not intrinsically difficult but calls for an appropriate slow swing style and good control throughout the range.
