Peterloo (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Arnold, Malcolm - Duncan, Andrew

Peterloo is the derisive name given to an incident that happened on16th August 1819 in St Peter's Fields, Manchester, when an orderly crowd of some 80,000 people met to hear a speech on political reform. On the orders of the magistrates they were interrupted by the Yeomanry, who attempted to seize the banners they carried, and to arrest their speaker, Henry Hunt. Cavalry was sent in, and eleven people were killed and four hundred injured in the ensuing panic. This overture attempts to portray these happenings. Suitable for 1st Section Bands and above. Prelude and Chorale (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Roels, Stijn

Prelude and Chorale is a scintillating, dynamic opening piece based on the brilliant finale from the earlier concert work Aureus. The latter work is built around a magnificent hymn, which also forms the common thread running through this overture. As the title suggests, the work begins with a modern 'prelude': a prologue to the actual hymn. The beginning of the hymn, especially, serves as the source of the thematic material. The hymn melody itself is immediately embellished by a counter-melody and supported by a rhythm section of bass and drums. This all leads to an energetic passage in which the proverbial stops are pulled out once more.Duration: 3:00

Academic Festival Overture - Johannes Brahms

In 1881, Brahms accepted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Breslau University in Poland. For the occasion, he wrote his Academic Festival Overture, for orchestra, basing it on student songs. It is a splendid example of a serious composer writing a piece of musical "fun".Romantic in style, the composer's great skill is evident in his linking of the tunes, and his different treatment of them.In performance, there is rich scope for expression, for tenderness, boisterousness and high spirits, as well as thoughtfulness and an underlying purpose are all present in the music. The Overture ends with a typically Brahmsian climax, built into a welter of instrumental colour. The arrangement for brass band is by Denis Wright.

Ballet for Band - Score & Parts - Joseph Horovitz

Ballet for Band was written as the test-piece for the Championship section finals of the National Brass Band Championships, held at the Royal Albert Hall in October 1983.Although the work is not programmatic, within the space of ten minutes, the composer uses a form which might be considered to be the form of a ballet. Therefore there is a fanfare at the beginning which might be the overture, different characters appear, and scenes are quite clearly marked by, for instance, baritones or by muted trombone, although the listener is encouraged to use his own imagination.Thematically the work is tightly controlled, with the same material re-appearing in many different guises, as a flugel horn solo, as a waltz on the horns, and on the euphonium. Horovitz employs a rich harmonic pallet, but the work is most definitely rooted in a tonal language, with hints of Straussian richness later in the work. The work is notable for its middle section, in which the music gets slower and slower, providing a real test of control throughout the band.Ballet for Band was by no means Joseph Horovitz's first work for the medium: his fine "Concerto for Euphonium and Band" is frequently played, and he has also written a cantata entitled "Samson" for choir and band.
