£48.53Angel Voices (Rhapsody for Soprano Cornet & Band) Brian Bowen
This solo for soprano cornet and brass band was written by the late Brian Bowen for the New York Staff Band in 1989 when Gordon Ward was its very fine soprano cornetist. The title comes from a song by Ernest Rance (music) and Reginald Woods (lyrics) published by The Salvation Army in 1955. In this rhapsody Rance's melody is first alluded to by the horns at the pick-up to bars 19-21, then more fully with the soloist's entry to bar 51 (but in minor mode until bar 55). Much of the original music is ethereal in nature, maybe reflecting the angelic hosts. Published by BrookWright Music in 2023, the score now carries the inscription 'To the memory of Linda Ward' - Gordon Ward's wife who very sadly died in November 2021. This work was commissioned by the Bolsover International Brass Band Summer School in memory of David Morris, a valued member of both the Summer School and Festival of Brass team. The light-hearted, traditional style March is playable by most levels of bands and following its popularity, has been declared the BIBBSS's signature tune. A donation from each sale of this title is being made to fund the 'Dave Morris Bursary Fund', to aid young people that need financial support to attend the Summer School. Course leader, Steven Mead describes the work as, "A really outstanding composition, based on the traditional March format, but with a freshness and excellent thematic material. It is a brisk march in 6/8 that is a delight to play and to listen to."

This energetic piece, one of the many qualities of Ennio Morricone's music, has recently been brought back into the public eye with its use in the new 'Health Lottery" Adverts and many other TV appearances. The music comes from the iconic picture "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" while the character Tuco searches for the $200,000 hidden in a graveyard. Since then, its been a hit world wide, being used in several media campaigns. its success can be attributed to the strong, powerful melody that last long in the memory. Now for the first time, arranged for band by Andi Cook, the brass band can enjoy the powerful piece that follows its delicate opening for Solo Horn. Huntingtower - Ottorino Respighi - Alastair Wheeler
Whilst best known in the Brass Band world for The Pines of Rome, Respighi wrote Huntingtower in 1932 for Concert (wind) Band for a special concert in memory of John Philip Sousa, who had passed away on March 6 of that year. The work was premiered by the US Army Band. With only around 6 weeks to compose the work, his inspiration for the piece came from a visit to Huntingtower Castle in Scotland. A standard in the wind & military band repetoire, the work is available for Brass Band and is a great alternative to some of the traditional Overtures.

£159.99Omaggio - Philip Sparke
Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concert band premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de musica de Malaga. The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, FANTASIA, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the band (piano), which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, BALLAD, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The third movement, THE KING TRIUMPHANT, pays homage to Steven's late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex's name ('Rex' being Latin for 'king') as well as his love of Eric Ball's Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close.

£40.00Shackleton's Cross - Howard Goodall
Shackleton s Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910 1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall s sensitive arrangement fortrumpet or cornet and brass band follows the composer s alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ).

DURATION: 4'00". DIFFICULTY: 4th+. 'By Water and the Word' was composed for 2020 Brass Band Summer School in memory of it's long-standing course administrator Philip Biggs, who passed away in 2019. Aside from his work with BBSS, Philip was also the renowned administrator for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain where my first opportunities as a writer of brass music were presented. It's a certainty to say that without Philip's work at the head of this organisation, there's zero chance I would be able to do what I do today as a musician, and for that it was a huge honour to write this short work in his memory. Under Maestro Bramwell Tovey, each course would conclude with an encore of The Day Thou Gavest (St. Clements) and one of the most used hymn tunes throughout the week was The Church's One Foundation (Aurelia). Since then, these two tunes have become synonymous with the NYBBGB and in turn Philip's life & work, so I felt it fitting to combine these two wonderful sacred melodies into a new work paying homage to those memories. .
