Deus Solus (meaning God Alone) was composed for the Melbourne Staff Band's 130th anniversary at the request of Bandmaster Ken Waterworth. It is based on three Christian tunes - the 18th century hymn O God, our help in ages past, and the more contemporary songs God and God alone (Phill McHugh) and Chris Bowater's Faithful God. The work begins quietly and with a sense of the unknown, with references to O God, our help in ages past, alluding to the formation and early days of the band.

The band was formed through the fusion of two existing music societies by the late Michel Versavel, who was the combined ensemble's first conductor. This music was written for Salvation Brass. It is declamatory in style and would fit the role of an intrada. The words associated are by a former General of The Salvation Army, Albert Orsborn, and have a very optimistic tone, consistent with the Christian faith. The chorus reads: Jesus shall conquer, lift up the strain! Evil shall perish and righteousness shall reign.The tune used is Pilgrims (T.B. 548), by Henry Thomas Smart, the 19th Century English composer and organist, who also wrote another of my favourite hymn tunes, Regent Square. Keeping a steady tempo will help to preserve the dignity of the theme and also help to avoid the busier passages in the score from being rushed. As ever, articulation and dynamics require careful attention.

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.Duration: 11.00

This piece attempts to portray atmospheric pictures through music. The opening section evokes the somewhat misty and hazy early morning atmosphere surrounding the ancient monument. When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a special atmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major concert work for advanced bands.Duration: 15:00

This sublime arrangement of the much loved hymn tune Rockingham ('When I survey the wondrous cross'), was arranged by Karl Whelan in memory of Frank Naylor. Frank was a faithful member of North Ashton Band based in Wigan (UK), a renowned tenor horn player and an inspiration to his many pupils over the years. In reference to Frank's slow melody piece of choice, there is also a reference in the trombones to Star of Bethlehem by Stephen Adams, leading into the final verse. GATHERING, The (Brass Band Set) - Marcus Venables
This concert opener was written for the Canadian Staff Band and its European tour, culminating in its attendance of the ISB120 event in London in June 2011. The tour included some time in Holland and, appropriately, the well-known Dutch hymn 'We gather together' was selected as the source material for this work. The melody is used in a couple of different settings before reaching a rousing conclusion.
