Concerto for EuphoniumIn League with Extraordinary Gentlemen combines two of composer Peter Graham's life interests - composition and 19th century popular fiction. Each of the concerto's three movements takes its musical inspiration from extraordinary characters who have transcended the original genre and have subsequently found mass audiences through film, television and comic book adaptations.The first movement follows a traditional sonata form outline with one slight modification. The order of themes in the recapitulation is reversed, mirroring a plot climax in the H.G. Wells novella The Time Machine (where the protagonist, known only as The Time Traveller, puts his machine into reverse bringing the story back full circle).The Adventure of the Final Problem is the title of a short story published in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. This is an account of the great detective's final struggle with his long-time adversary Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The music takes the form of a slowed down lndler (a Swiss/Austrian folk dance) and various acoustic and electronic echo effects call to mind the alpine landscape. The final bars pose a question paralleling that of Conan Doyle in the story - have we really seen the last of Sherlock Holmes?The final movement, The Great Race, (available separately) follows Phileas Fogg on the last stage of his epic journey "Around the World in Eighty Days" (from the novel by Jules Verne). The moto perpetuo nature of the music gives full rein to the soloist's technical virtuosity. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloist's increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen was first performed in the brass band version by David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the RNCM Concert Hall Manchester on January 30, 2009.

The Final Frontier - Geert Jan Kroon
In The Final Frontier, the composer explores different associations with the universe. Inspired by Stephen Hawking's (1942-2018) book Brief Answers to the Big Questions, the piece describes the wonders and dangers of the universe, the big questions about the smallest elements, and the possibility of space travel. The work consists of four movements. The first movement, 'Energy and Space', is the exposition of both main materials. With energy and space, a universe can be created. The second movement, 'The Great Unknown', is a fast section in which the materials are further explored and depicts the dangers of the universe, like supernovae and black holes. The third movement, 'The Big Questions', is a slow movement with different soloists and music of a reflective nature. Imagine how in the tiniest elements, whole dimensions could be rolled up. Also, a Dutch pioneer in cosmology is hidden in the notes. The fourth movement, 'The Final Frontier', is a big build-up to a majestic finale, portraying the excitement of space travel. The Final Frontier was the set test piece of the 3rd section at the Dutch National Brass Band Championships.

'Prelude on St Clement's' was composed for the 2023 Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band Festival in memory of internationally renowned conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey. . Bramwell was the Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain throughout the composer's 7 years as a tenor horn player in the NYBBGB and the hymn tune 'St Clement's (no. 82 in the 120 Hymns for Brass Band book) was used by Bramwell to conclude every course. This setting of 3 verses of the hymn tune 'The Day Thou Gavest. was premiered by the RNCM Brass Band in January 2023.

COMPOSER: Charles StanfordARRANGER: Neil LockTo celebrate the planned re-opening of St. Mary's Church, Liss, 2020In 1909, Charles Villiers Stanford composed the chant to which the last psalm in the book, Psalm 150, is now usually sung. This is a free arrangement of that tune for brass band, which can be used either as a stand-alone piece or as an encore, particularly at the end of a concert in a church. I use some of Stanford's original harmonies, but most of the chords are my own.At the beginning and end, imagine the band playing at one end of a cathedral. After the first, very loud phrase, we hear the sound reflected back from the far end. The fast main section is divided into six "verses" as follows:Praise him in the cornets and trumpets;Praise him in the horns and baritones;Praise him in the deepest basses,And praise him in the trombones;Praise him in the loud percussion,And in the euphoniums.This piece was first played in public as part of the Liss Band's first formal post-COVID concert, in St. Mary's Church, Liss on July 16th, 2022.Suitable for most bandsLM469ISMN : 9790570004690

McKinley, was a colleague of Curnow on the faculty of Asbury College and a member of The Salvation Army Student Fellowship Band. The work was written for this band and premiered by them at the Centennial National Congress in 1980 which was held at Asbury College. Curnow has endeavoured to capture the spirit of early day Salvationists as they gave themselves completely to the great salvation war. Three songs support the three-part structure; 1) Stand like the brave 2) In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust 3) Rescue the perishing.

Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these, published in 1551, were called Musyck Boexken, or music book. I have arranged this incredibly memorable Big Band piece by Billy Maxted as a feature for the Timps and Kit, inspired by the man who made it famous, that spectacular drummer and showman - ERIC DELANEY -who, at the age of 83, is still performing in the UK and further afield. A book by Eddie Sammons about his astonishing career, including contributions from many famous artists and lots of amusing anecdotes, should be available in 27. The City of Lincoln Band inform me that this was one of their most popular items on their visit to Germany.The Timpani and Drum Kit parts will need good players. To get the best effect, a set of three timps is required, although an optional part for two timps is included. The timps and drums are coordinated, so the parts need to be played as written. For those bands with more than two percussionists, there is a third part, which, although optional, would certainly add to the overall effect. Although the Timp & Drum parts are technically demanding, the remainder of the parts are within the capability of most players."I'm sure this item will be a huge success with popular light music audiences everywhere".
