This is a big band style number which is modelled on Barrie Gott's brilliant Lightwalk. It begins with a walking bass before horns state the highly whistleable tune for the first time. The full band quickly joins and there is an extended solo break for cornet. Finale from Symphony No. 2 (The Resurrection) - Mahler, G - Harper, P
One of the most life-affirming pieces of music ever composed, Mahler's 2nd Symphony, subtitled 'The Resurrection', was first performed in Berlin in 1895. Mahler's interest in the mysteries of the afterlife is well-known and is a recurring theme throughout all his nine symphonies. Philip Harper has arranged the final passages of the 2nd Symphony, which begins with a profound hymn set to the words of Friedrich Klopstock-- 'Rise again, yea, thou shalt rise again'.The music contains one of Mahler's magical transitionary passages, building in intensity, before the hymn is restated in all its majesty at the moment of glorious resurrection. Gopak from Fair at Sorochinsk - Moussorgsky - Byles, D
Moussorgsky started this work in 1874, seven years before he died at the age of 42. He never completed the work, and three other Russian composers added "their" endings. La Fiesta - Corea, C - Harper, P
Chick Corea is an American pianist and composer of Sicilian and Spanish descent, whose long career in jazz music continues to this day. A member of Miles Davis's band in the 1960s, he formed his own band Return to Forever in the 1970s before establishing himself as one of the greats of modern jazz.La Fiesta was composed in 1972 and included on Return to Forever's debut album. The music is in one-in-a-bar waltz time and switches between Latin carnival-style and jazz waltz, with stand-up solos for cornet, baritone and tenor horn.
