2011 Butlins 3rd SectionHungerford Town was commissioned by Tim Crouter and the Hungerford Town Band.The piece is in four movements played through without a break:The Black Prince: Opens with a short motif on which most of the following music is based. The music settles down into a mysterious mood that builds to the first transformation of the opening theme. The music is solid and rugged.The Coach Road: Hungerford was always a popular resting place for the horse drawn coaches on the way to London. The music is light and cheerful and features the soprano cornet and solo horn as postilions.St. Lawrence's Church: The previous motif from the first baritone becomes the main theme for this section that gives plenty of scope for warm and expressive playing. Music from the start of the suite is heard before it moves into a celebratory march.The Bear: The Bear Is a local inn frequented by travellers. The opening theme is heard again and brings the work to a triumphant close.Suitable for 4th Section Bands and above

This stunning arrangement of O Holy Night, showcases the lyrical and expressive potential of the Flugel Horn or Trumpet, arranged by acclaimed jazz composer Tom Kubis and transcribed by Dave Collins. Originally made famous by the legendary Wayne Bergeron with the Tom Kubis Big Band, this arrangement has since become a favourite among brass soloists worldwide. It received its concert premiere with the North York Temple Band (Canada) under Bandmaster Glenn Barlow, featuring the virtuosic talents of Marcus and Harrington Venables. The piece was later recorded by the International Staff Band, conducted by Dr. Stephen Cobb, on their 2016 album Celebrate the Season. The featured soloist on that recording was the world-renowned Philip Cobb. This arrangement offers flexible performance options - it can be presented as a solo feature or as a duet for Flugel Horn and Soprano Cornet (cued into the parts), making it ideal for both concert settings and festive performances. £33.70Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' (Brass Band - Full Score Print) Andrew Wainwright
This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion. This piece was written as a full length virtuosic solo based on an earlier work called Humble Hero, which is also available from BrookWright Music. It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Ken Bradley (1962 - 2022) was one of Australia's best-known, well-loved, and talented brass musicians. The solo is also available from this website with piano accompaniment. Seaside Odyssey is a celebration of the British seaside! The music represents a juxtaposition between natural and manmade elements; there are two main musical themes - the reflective sea (a wordless setting of John Masefield's Sea Fever) and a more lively 'seaside' theme, heard separately in different ways and later together. From childhood memories, sand, beach and cliffs to cafes, ice creams, fish and chips, buckets and spades, boating trips, beach huts, bandstands, piers, theatres, gardens, mini golf, arcades and more, Seaside Odyssey is a journey from dawn to dusk with the sea at the heart of the music. This work was commissioned by Grimethorpe Colliery Band for its seaside tour, August 2023, where it performed at Paignton, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Shanklin and Herne Bay. Includes optional poems and words specially curated from poets associated with the seaside towns, which can be read before a performance. This unique arrangement by Fendall Hill of Away in a Manger brings together two beloved melodies of the cherished Christmas carol, seamlessly intertwining the popular American setting known as "Mueller" with the gentle strains of "Cradle Song", the tune favoured across Britain, Ireland, and the British Commonwealth. First introduced to American audiences by James R. Murray in Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses (1887), the Mueller melody - often mistakenly attributed to Martin Luther - has become the most recognised version of the carol in the United States. Complementing this is the lyrical Cradle Song, composed by William J. Kirkpatrick and published in Around the World with Christmas (1895), offering a tender counterpoint to Murray's setting. £33.70Adagietto from Symphony No.5 (Brass Band) Mahler arr. Keith M. Wilkinson
Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 is arguably his best known and most loved composition. The Adagietto from that symphony, often performed on its own, is scored for strings and harp only and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful tunes ever written. It is marked sehr langsam (very slow) and is immensely serene and tranquil, often performed at commemorative events such as the concert following the events of September 11th, 2001. It has been said that the movement is a love song to the composer's wife, Alma. The symphony was composed in 1901 and 1902 and this movement received its British premiere in 1909 at a Promenade concert directed by Henry Wood. The Adagietto received additional popularity when used in the 1971 film Death In Venice. This arrangement by Keith M. Wilkinson shortens the movement slightly and now gives brass bands the opportunity to programme this delightful work. £59.91The Glory of Colour (Brass Band) Ivan G. Andrews
This work by Ivan Andrews was inspired by the large Baptistry window of the new Coventry Cathedral and will be suitable both as a contest or concert work. The window was conceIved and designed by Basil Spence and was intended to be a worldwide experience. When installed it was claimed to be "the single largest window in stained glass that hitherto had ever been contemplated and brought into existance." The stained glass design was done by artist John Piper and when completed was described by Bishop Bardsley as a "triumphant expression of faith, a faith encapsulated in the 'glory of colour'".* Hence the title for the piece. The composer writes: 'When thinking of this music the traditional tune now often called Monks Gate kept coming to me. The words often sung to this tune were penned by John Bunyan and each stansa ends with the words "To be a pilgrim". The Cathedral in Coventry, although a Christian Church, is designed to bring all faiths together in Unity - there is a "Unity Chapel" opposite the Baptistry window so the concept of pilgrimage seemed perfectly apt to me. The music is therefore designed to reflect many colours as there are many expressions of faith. Single fragments of the Monks Gate tune are used as a basis for what might be deemed 'variations'. The tune is heard in full towards the end of the piece and then the music rises to a climax of bright brilliant white light. The colours of the window are darker on the outer edges but they all circulate towards the brilliant white at the centre - representing the source of all faith.'
