Festive Intrada - Bill Willis
FESTIVE INTRADAThis is a lively opener using the well know Christmas tunes of Silent Night and O Come, All Ye FaithfulAfter a bright opening, Silent Night comes in at letter B from Solo Cornets and Soprano followed by the Horns and back to the Cornets. This leads into a brief reference to O Come, All Ye Faithful from the Trombones before the full tune appears at letter C. Care with the syncopated rhythms to ensure the momentum is maintained. As the piece concludes, Silent Night returns, with a bar of Deck the Halls thrown in for good measure leading to a bright ending.

"Gratitude" is one of Grieg's beautiful lyrical pieces, Op. 62 No. 2.Eva Knardahl made a beautiful recording that I well remember was used as background for a picture cavalcade by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation during the passing of His Majesty King Olav V of Norway in 1991.In this arrangement for band, I have tried to vary the instrumentation, both for the sake of more colours and to emphasize the drama.This piece should be played rubato with elastic phrasing. The form can be described as AABACoda. The most dramatic section is the B part from measure 25, which peaks just before measure 38. The last four measures (from measure 53) can be done a bit 'meno' in tempo.Reid Gilje

"Kanskje kommer Kongen" ("Perhaps the King is Coming") is yet another example of Knutsen and Ludvigsen's creativity and imagination.The arrangement begins with a short fanfare in the introduction. From letter B, the melody is carried by horn and trombone with a majestic character.Ensure good precision in the accompaniment. From letter C, the style is Latin-inspired, resembling Samba. Alternative percussion solutions are possible here.From letter D, there is a pizzicato effect in 8th-notes, with sonorous melodic lines. The style becomes majestic and elevated again from letter E,then returns to the Latin style from letter F until the end.Reid Gilje

The first movement makes use of A-B-A form, with the A theme having a bright joyous character and the B theme having a contrasting more lyrical feel. Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempoconcert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, "Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." An effective opener to any Christmas concert, based on the French carol, 'Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella'. It tells the story of a group of children in medieval Provence, dressed up as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles as they proceed to the stable. As they draw closer and their excitement increases, they are constantly reminded by their parents to keep the noise down so that they don't wake up the baby Jesus. The music begins quietly and builds to a majestic conclusion. "If I were still conducting bands regularly, this would certainly be on my list as a Christmas concert opener - it sets the energy and mood most effectively. The scoring is terrific."
