!!I Vow to Thee My Country. Originally for unison voices with orchestra, Holst adapted it as a hymn tune and called it Thaxted , named after the village where he lived for many years. Because of the sentiment in the words it has now become a staple of Remembrance services.The American Composer, Geoff Knorr, incorporated Holst's music into his score for the strategy-based video game Civilisation, where it is used to depict the England of Elizabeth I. This work was written by Morley Calvert, the Canadian composer, especially for the first European Brass Band Championships held in 1978.The piece consists of three contrasting movements. The Introduction opens with a slow, mysterious figure after the first fanfare-like unison notes. This leads to the main section, a quick 'one-in-a-bar' movement centred around a persistent figure.The Elegy opens with an unaccompanied Euphonium solo, which is then passed through to horn, cornet, and basses in the manner of a passacaglia. This is broken and then the movement fragments.After the tension of the Elegy, the Caprice provides much needed relief: a spritely dance, very rhythmical in character, the theme of which is thrown around the band with great abandon.

Programme Notes:Certain phases of Life are common to most if not all men and the music of the Tone Poem carries the listener through four of such phases.a) In the Andante Molto Maestoso a man's outlook on Life as a thing of seriousness and dignity is shown.b) The Allegro Vivace which follow shows him facing its problems with a spirit of vigorous optimism, while two tributary themes suggest that Life, with all its seriousness, is not devoid of humour and happiness.c) The short section which follows, Maestoso, is a reminder that times of stress and trouble are inevitable but these are quickly dispelled by thed) Andante Nobilemente, portraying the helping and ennobling power of true love.The music again proceeds to review these four phases of Life, the concluding section showing Love triumphant over all.

Nightlights was commissioned by Chris Jeans and Don Collins for Youth Brass 2000, to be used as part of their programme at the 2019 European Championships. Written during January 2019, Nightlights received its world premiere by Youth Brass 2000, conducted by Chris Jeans with Siobhan Bates as soloist, at the 2019 European Brass Band Championships in Montreux, Switzerland.Originally written as a Tenor Horn solo, this version for Tuba was arranged for and is dedicated to Dr Joanna Ross Hersey.Nightlights is intended to illustrate a winter's evening looking out across Lake Geneva from Montreux. Tiny lights appear beneath the mountains from faraway homes and vehicles, flickering in the distance and shimmering in the reflections on the water. Tiny, blinking nightlights against the inky blue of the clear sky. Thousands of stars shine above, blurring the boundaries between land, water, and the heavens into a sparkling ether. Transfixed, the bustle of sounds and lights from Montreux seems a lot further away than it is in reality. Eventually, each little light blinks out, one at a time, leaving the chill of the cold night air and an empty sky.Duration: 4.30
