£45.00Symphony No.1, Finale from (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Rachmaninoff, Sergei - Littlemore, Phillip
Rachmaninov composed his First Symphony in 1895, at the age of just 22 years. It received its first performance on March 27, 1897, at a Russian Symphony Society concert in St. Petersburg with Alexander Glazunov conducting. The premiere was not well-received, and Rachmaninov himself blamed Glazunov for a lacklustre approach for beating time rather than finding the music. Some contemporary reports even suggested that Glazunov was inebriated when he took to the stage! Despite the disappointment of the premiere performance, Rachmaninov never destroyed the score but left it behind when he left Russia to settle in the West, eventually it was given up for lost. After the composer's death, a two-piano transcription of the symphony surfaced in Moscow, followed by a set of orchestral parts at the conservatory in Saint Petersburg. In March 1945, the symphony was performed in Moscow for the first time since its 1897 premiere. It was a grand success, and this led to a new and more enthusiastic evaluation of the symphony. In March 1948 it received a similarly successful American premiere and the work proceeded to establish itself in the general repertory. The final movement (Allegro con fuoco) is colourful and grand but not without its darkly contrasting, menacing episodes that intensifies its malevolence. It is a work overflowing with ideas demonstrating a strong, highly individual, and self-assured young talent. Duration: 5:40

He remembers sins no more (S.A.S.B. 460), the positive message of Easter Sunday is reflected in this bright march style.1356: Selection - I love the sweetest name (Noel Jones)This devotional selection includes three songs that feature the name of Jesus and derives its title from the following lines of those songs; 'How sweet the name of Jesus sounds' (S.A.S.B. 78), 'O, how I love the Saviour's name! The sweetest name on earth' (S.A.S.B. 94) and 'Sweetest name on mortal tongue' (S.A.S.B. 93).1357: Renewal (Harold Burgmayer)Will J. Brand penned the song Renewal (S.A.S.B. 634), with music by Bramwell Coles, for 'Day of Renewal' meetings conducted by General Albert Orsborn in October 1949. It was published in that form in The Musical Salvationist in 1951. Over time these meaningful words of consecration became wedded to an alternative tune, a lovely melody by Oscar Ahnfelt known as Trust in God (T.B. 903). This setting for band is based on a male-voice arrangement, conceived for a time of renewed consecration, sung by massed bands at the Canadian Staff Band's 50th Anniversary Festival in 2019.1358: Groove Hosanna! (Munashe Chikwezvero)This is a funk setting of three well-known melodies associated with Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Today, such celebratory processions, and indeed most large gatherings, usually feature rich forms of music-making. Music provides atmosphere and generates excitement, and it is hoped that a funk inspired arrangement of these songs will inspire listeners to 'move to the groove'. The first two songs, Children of Jerusalem (S.A.S.B. 356) and Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising (S.A.S.B. 362) encourage us to sing 'Loud hosannas to our King!'. The words of the third song, When his salvation bringing, remind us that he "smiled to hear their song".

£29.95St. Andrew's Variations (Score Only)
This piece, written for the East Anglian Brass Band Festival in 1998, takes the form of eight variations and a finale, loosely based on the descending third motif heard in the initial theme. It was initially composed for junior band, and expanded and rescored for full band in 2006. There is no significance in the title, other than the fact it was written by a Scotsman to be played in the St Andrew's Hall, in Norwich!Alan Fernie was born and brought up in the Scots mining village of Newtongrange. From the age of 13 he learned to play the trombone both at school and with the local brass band, going on to study music in Glasgow and London. After a short period working as an orchestral musician, Alan moved into instrumental education, spending over 20 years teaching brass in schools all over the East of Scotland. It was during this time that he began to conduct and he has since directed bands at all levels, winning many awards. He first wrote for brass whilst still a student, and his music is now played, recorded and published throughout the world.In 2009, Alan was honoured with the "President's Award" from the Scottish Brass Band Association for services to banding. He is also proud to be associated as composer in residence with the acclaimed charity "Brass for Africa", with whom he spent two months recently teaching in Kampala, Uganda. Living in the Scottish Borders, Alan now works as a freelance musician, finding time to write, teach, conduct, judge, perform and act as compere throughout the UK and beyond.

The work is a contemplative exploration of the subtle nuances of communication, memory, and the passing of time. It reflects on the experience of crossing paths with others and forming connections that may gradually grow distant over time. This piece invites listeners to reflect on how signals - both audible and emotional - can shift, evolve, and sometimes fade. VIEW SCORE PDF Gobsmacked was commissioned by Ravnanger Brass Band (Norway). The composer Robbert Vos writes: 'Gobsmacked is composed as an opening or encore piece which, as the title already reveals, is meant to surprise or overwhelm the audience! After a brief opening fanfare, the main theme is introduced by the solo cornet and euphonium. An accelerando leads to a quick movement, where this main theme is transformed into a con brio. In this section there's a lot of energy to be unleashed and every band member plays a roll in creating that. Throughout the piece there are many surprises, for example some unexpected time changes, percussion effects to wake you and some trombone glissandi to make you smile. After a short and atmospheric reminiscence by the flugel to the solos from the beginning of the piece, there comes a brief percussion interruption which leads to a reprise of the con brio, but this time in slightly different form. This all comes together in the finale where a big accelerando will lead to an exciting close.' DURATION: 8 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 1st+. That Promised Land was the culmination of 5 years of my personal interest in spiritual music since performing Michael Tippett's wonderful Oratorio 'A Child of Our Time' at the RNCM. Tippett's work combines original material, with music inspired and based upon spirituals, whilst all of the major 'chorus' sections are direct settings of those tunes. This was a work that had stuck with me for a long time, and one I tried to emulate in a smaller form with this work. The title is a quote from one of the verses of the spiritual 'Deep River'. This piece was composed for Jaren Hornmusikkforening as part of their programme for the 2018 SIDDIS Championships held in Stavanger, Norway. .

Kobolt - John Brakstad
"Cobalt" was commisioned by Modum Janitsjar as own choice piece for the Norwegian Wind Band Championships, third section in 2009.The Royal Cobalt Works of Modum were established in 1773 to extract cobalt ore from the local mines. The works were in operation until 1893.The cobalt was used in the production of cobalt blue pigment for the worlds porcelain and glass industry.To day it is a museum showing us how people at that time worked and lived.Most of the work was done by hand. There were also bad accidents with many fatalites.But in their free time there were dancing and drinking, and the entire piece ends with a dance-episode including a local tune.

The source of inspiration for this composition was the so-called 'genetic code'. Something which is universal, as almost all organisms on our planet use the same code for their genetic information and therefore speak the same 'language', as it were. The fact that plants, animals, and humans are all subject to the universality of this code fascinates the composer time and time again. Thus, he has chosen a musical motif for this phenomenon, which has been woven through the various musical passages of this work like a genetic thread.Genetic Code was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Brass Band Championships, in 2025, and to be the compulsory piece in the Excellence Division that same year.

Arild Sandvold (1895 - 1984) began his studies at the Music Conservatory in Kristiania (Oslo) in 1906, in piano and organ as well as music theory. After his debut as organist and pianist, he had his debut as orchestral conductor in 1924. At the same time he also had two periods of studies in Leipzig. In addition to studies in piano and organ, he received tutoring in composition. He was a teacher at the Oslo Music Conservatory and organist and a cathedral cantor in Oslo for more than 50 years. Sandvold brought both Baroque and Romantic organ works to a wider audience. He wrote a number of works for organ, in addition to music for choir and orchestra. The polyfony of the lateBaroque and the harmony of the Romantic period serve as the basis of his musical style. "A Christmas Pastorale" arranged with thoughts about the brass bands possibility for sound and colour, and should be a nice piece to do on concerts in the Christmas time.
