    Dragon Dances

Dragon Dances was commissioned by Owen Farr, who is also the work's dedicatee, gave the first performance with the Cornwall Youth Band conducted by Richard Evans on 5 April 2010 and has recorded it on his solo CD "A New Dawn" accompanied by the Cory Band conducted by Philip Harper.Being a Welsh composer, writing music for a Welsh soloist, I was naturally keen to reflect this in the music, and I drew inspiration from two particularly Welsh concepts - "hiraeth" and "hwyl". "Hiraeth" is a word that has no direct translation into English, but an approximation would be 'yearning for home'. Like the other celtic nations, Wales has a widespread diaspora of people who left to seek new lives out in the empire and "hiraeth" is a way of summing up the homesickness felt by these exiles, some of whom return each year for a special ceremony at the Royal National Eisteddfod. "Hwyl" is an even more complicated word, variously meaning ecstatic joy, fervour, equable temperament and even the characteristic sing-song oration style of the great Welsh Methodist preachers.I have attempted to make the music reflect both of these, with the melancholy first part of the work inspired by the hymns and solo songs for which Wales is famous, and the second part having a much more dance-like, joyful quality. To view a PDF preview of the full score, click here; to view a preview of the solo part click here.

FRANK BRIDGE - THE COMPLETE WORKS (print)

FRANK BRIDGE - THE COMPLETE WORKS Portraits of English composer in his time, with full Thematic Catalog of Works (1900 - 1941), compiled and edited by Paul Hindmarsh Revised edition published in 2016 by PHM Publishing ? 2016 by Paul Hindmarsh 272pp, A4, Print version (? 40.00) available by pre-paid order via www.paulhindmarsh.com PHMB001print FRANK BRIDGE - THE COMPLETE WORKS is a major revision and update of my life and work of this English composer originally published by Faber Music in 1983. Frank Bridge - A Thematic Catalog charted the composer's intriguing creative journey from 1900, the year of his first surviving compositions were 61 in 1941. Much has changed with regard to Bridge research since 1983. His life and work has been the subject of many post-graduate research projects. All his major works have been recorded and are more widely performed. Bridge's music has been in the public domain since 2011. April 13, 2016, when the manuscript of Phantasie in F minor for string quartet (H.55) was discovered in the archive of theWorshipful Company of Musicians. After half a lifetime of writing about Bridge's life and work for journals, program previews and registration notes, I have a lot of writing and an extensive selection of correspondence by Bridge and his friends and some significant 'period' articles and images to create, I hope, a more complete picture of Frank Bridge inthe context of his time. I have also included full details of commercial recordings or each work (up to January 2016) within the chronological sequence. Shine - Peter Meechan

Shine is my second large scale work for solo tuba, following on from my concerto Episodes and Echoes. Like the concerto, Shine was commissioned and premiered (with the Grimethorpe Brass Band, conducted by Howard Evans) by Les Neish - the title being an anagram of the soloist surname.Although in one movement, Shine has 3 broad sections, each requiring virtuosic skill and dexterity from the soloist. The opening section features lots of bright, metallic sounds - especially in the percussion section - providing the accompaniment to soloist as they demonstrate the range and flexibility of the tuba.Peter Meechan, 2011

Home of Legends - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Home of Legends was commissioned by, and composed for the 'Brass Band Summer School'.The music pays homage to the many legends who have been involved with this prestigious institution throughout its history. The BBSS staff are regarded as some of the finest brass players in the world and former Musical Directors and Presidents include the great Harry Mortimer, Philip Jones, Roy Newsome and Richard Evans who directed the world premiere of this work. The music starts with an off-stage trumpet or cornet representing the memory of great players from the past. The band then enters quietly and the piece gradually builds in the style of a majestic musical procession to the final chord designed to show the fantastic sound of a brass band in full flow.In recent times this work has been adopted by the world famous Black Dyke Band from Queensbury - a genuine home of legends for over 150 years.

JOY THROUGH THE AGES (Brass Band Set) - Howard Evans

This work was written for the 125th anniversary of Boscombe Band, celebrated in November 2011, and is the title track of the band' album released in the same year. The music is celebratory in nature and is dedicated to all those who have served in the band during its 125 year history. The theme of the work is a song by Charles Hutchison Gabriel which was the favourite of the band's librarian, Gerald Whittingham, who was 'promoted to Glory' after a long battle with a brain tumour. The title comes from the last verse, 'When with the ransomed in Glory, his face I at last shall see, 'twill be my joy through the ages, to sing of his love for me'.

Images of the Millennium - Full 2 Band Version - H. Snell

Richard Evans' request was that the work should mirror aspects of the history of banding while also looking forward. 1. FANFARE. In this movement the work is introduced.2. TOCCATA: CONTEST DAY. The gathering together of players and audience for a contest day is treated in a busy, sometimes jazzy manner.3. PASTORALE: 'A GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND'. Looking back to the third and fourth decades of the nineteenth century and the rapid birth of brass bands and banding, this short Intermezzo invokes the popular picture postcard view of the past. Images of warfare appear briefly as a reminiscence of Britain's continuing military domination of the world, with Trafalgar and Waterloo still echoing on the horizon.4. MUSIC FOR A SILENT FILM: AN OLD MAN REMEMBERS PETERLOO. The reality of 'England's green and pleasant land' was somewhat different. On August 19th 1819 the Stalybridge Band was playing at a political meeting in St Peter's Fields in Manchester, later to become the site of the Free Trade Hall. The local Magistrate, sent in the cavalry. Shots were fired into the crowd, 11 people were killed and 500 injured. I present the scenes as followsthe holiday crowd in St Peter's Field entertained by the Band the unprovoked attack by the militia the flight from St Peter's Fieldthe funeral wake the lament5. SCHERZO: THE CRYSTAL PALACE. Only a few decades later brass bands were regular visitors to the greatest concert halls in the country. I see the Bands and their followers descending on London in trains and charabancs. 6. DREAM-NOCTURNE. As if in a trance, an unending musical line is passed around the ensemble to celebrate the players who possessed, and still possess, the sound and phrasing to enthrall the listener.7. ODYSSEY. The way forward now beckons. The music passes through conflict, struggle and turmoil on its way to release, resolution and finally to triumph.
